Here's some smaller mods that I use in every game:

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2764 by, of course, DarN.
This essential mod goes a long way toward making Oblivion's consolized interface useable. Configurable from within the game via a menu. I modify it with one of Luchaire's re-colorings, either http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16387 or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16897 I also use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14822 by WillieSea and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19063 by Badmagic to enliven the map with color and to replace what I consider to be ugly map markers with more aesthetically pleasing X's.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14065 by tejon, or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13879 bu ABO.
Two excellent character-levelling mods that do away with stat management, excel spreadsheets, visits to Wiki pages, etc, to research "builds". With these mods a player can just play and let a mod handle leveling seamlessly and invisibly in the background. I tend to prefer RL but I am using nGCD in my current game and am very impressed.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14304 by tejon.
This mod allows the player to control the speed of advancement of each skill. Easily configurable via an .ini.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11237 by tejon. Willpower again has an affect on the player's vulnerability to magic, as in previous ES games.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12149 by tejon. Attempts to expand on Bethesda's concept of Birthsigns and make them for interesting and fun, at all levels.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35300 by ZenshinZenrei. Introduces three special advantages to each of the predefined Oblivion classes in order to make them more unique. Advantages are similar to special class traits from Arena and Daggerfall. Custom classes can manually pick three Advantages.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7484 by Deathless Aphrodite.
Makes the player lose fatigue when running. When the player's fatigue hits 0 he starts to walk. Also allows the player to sprint for a brief time.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078 by TheNiceOne.
Using this mod merchants' gold goes up and down with each trade. Also does away with the haggle slider (what a relief!) Allows the player to specify how much gold they recive from looting containers, enemies, as quest rewards, etc. All configurable via .ini.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2037 by Quarn and Dejunai.
Removes flowers from plants after you have picked them. This is a great little visual aid when picking many plants very close together.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1840 by Woodman, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=21 by Tandem, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5138 by Soor, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5919 by b3w4r3, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=129 by Talonhoff and http://morrowind4kids.com/pseronwyrd/PWRunSpeed.zip by Pseron Wyrd are a collection of small tweak mods that I cannot bear to play without. Chase Camera Mod is essential to me because I play exclusively in third person and will quickly become nauseous without it; Bethesda went to great lengths to create the illusion of a seamless worl when they made Oblivion and then went and ruined it by spamming messages onto the player's screen everytime they enter a new cell, and No Load gets rid of that; Initial Glow gets rid of what I consider to be a very ugly 'plastic wrap' enchantment effect; Sleep Rest Wait Any Time, because no game has any business telling me when I can sleep, or where; No Psychic Guards tones down guards' clairvoyance a little bit; Run Speed Tweak slows down the base running/walking speed of the game to Morrowind's running/walking speeds.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2536 by Max Tael.
This is one of the plugins in Max Tael's Natural Environments suite of mods. It adds several non-hostile flying animals such as birds and butterflies.

http://morrowind4kids.com/pseronwyrd/PW_MorrowindFog.zip by Pseron Wyrd.
Oblivion's near-infinite view distance is ugly, in my opinion, and it also makes Cyrodiil feel much smaller than it ought to. My attempt to simulate Morrowind's fog. Also tweaks weather RBG values to achieve weather colors similar to those found in Max Tael's Natural Weather (making it a kind of Natural Weather Lite, in a way). Combined with Run Speed Tweak, Cyrodiil feels as large and wonderfully mysterious as Vvardenfell once did.

http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=942911 by Arthmoor.
Adds Morrowind-style transport to the game. A nicely immersive touch.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13099 by WillieSea.
This little mod adds spectators (and tweaks their animations and clothes), allows the player to loot equipment, adds a bone clock, new posters and keeps the place open all night. I added a smith in my version, the only thing the mod lacked.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977 by Emma.
An Alchemist-oriented companion with a mind of her own (and, as a bonus, dialog voiced by Emma herself).

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13536 -- No need to hold off on doing quests to get the best rewards. Now the rewards level with you.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22819 -- Makes all dungeons in the game darker by removing the universal ambient lighting and fog. You will need torch/light spell/night-eye to see well in dungeons.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11169 -- No more bandits standing around in the pitch black.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16282 -- Rather than stuffing a lit torch into your pack, you drop it in combat so you can actually see what's going on.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23757 -- No more starting in the dungeon.

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4385 -- This removes all merchant pvssyr while buying and selling items. The merchants will no longer say things like "That's a good deal." and "That's more than I'd usually pay."

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34474 -- Handwear for casters.

That was my mod list before it was fun with Deadly Reflex but it was way to easy and had low FPS

due to Quarl's Textures. Which was sick but it ran slower I like 50+ FPS at least.

With stock right now it works above this highest I saw was 400 FPS :)

but that was looking at a door inside a cave :)

Outside it stays 50+ though which is nice.

Can I have just Deadly Reflex and UOP's or will it break?

I love fatalities in that mod.

True Wrye Bash may be more than you need, nevertheless http://imgur.com/yOFtf.png a sample of the possible tweaking.

When building a bashedpatch you have MANY tweaks that can be made, and surprisingly might replace one or more mods that provide the same change, functionality or feature.

Some of you have very ...different? ideas about what qualifies a mod as "small" than I would have thought.

I would carefully examine the tweak options in Wrye Bash, as mentioned above. A lot of them replace the need for other mods.

For interface, get:
Darnified UI (any variety that suits you)
Toggleable Quantity Prompt
A to Take All

For leveling, get some kind of retroactive health and/or magicka so you don't have to think too hard about spending attribute points. nGCD or Realistic Leveling, as mentioned above, or simply Health and Magicka Overhaul.

Quest Award Leveler is essential in the same vein, in that you don't have to plan out when to do quests based on their rewards.

Everything else, I think, is a matter of taste. For gameplay changes, I particularly recommend:
Respawning Varla and Welkynd Stones (of course, I'm biased about this one)
No Psychic Guards
No Persistent Glow (removes the persistent glow seen while enchanted items are equipped, gains you minor FPS and better screenshots)
Light Spell Recolor (several options, all better than the default green)
GW71 Life Detect (life detect is reddish and somewhat shaped after the enemy's skeleton)
No More Annoying Skill Comments
Setsuna Dummy Training (makes all the training dummies already in the game usable)
Alternate Start - Arrive By Ship (you start on a boat on your way to IC or Anvil, your choice)

These are all small mods that I find myself using for every character and I've never had trouble with. Some of the mods I've linked require OBSE, but you might as well get OBSE early and get cozy with it anyway. ;)

Happy gaming!

What's the difference between http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1843 and http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5138? Both were recommended in this thread, but the only difference I can glean from the readmes is that No persistent enchantment glow fix doesn't affect weapons, while Initial glow doesn't mention whether or not it affects weapons, and Initial glow can be configured to affect monsters too. Is that right, and which one do you guys prefer?

Oblivion XP changes the way you level up, gain skill points and spend attribute points similar to WOW and Fallout 3 and NV, you kill stuff and explore locations for XP, gain enough XP and you advance to the next level. I definetly prefer it to the regular tedious leveling system, and you can set the amount of xp given for various actions. Fairly small file, but it requires a version of OBSE later than V18, although you can install both with Oblivion Mod Manager (mod sorter, saves you the headache of sifting through your Data file) in a heart beat.

Also, and while this is a big file, you might want to look Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul overhaul, ramps up the difficulty of the game in various ways such as potions being changed from instant healing to health over time, to higher damage from enemies (which are now leveled like in past Elder Scrolls games, not a feature I particularly like once I level past them since I cream them, though they're definetly harder to take down when you're lower than them), OOO changes the game in significant enough ways to make you rethink the way you play TES4.

Hope this helps, these are the mods I use and I'm fairly satisfied with them.
