I am against in-game character switching

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:14 pm

(yes, i made this post on SD forum but no one replied -_-)

A lot of people have been demanding that characters be switchable in the middle of the game. If splash damage does that they will COMPLETELY break the game and its mechanics. Those of you who want this have seriously failed to see the repercussions of allowing to switch characters mid game so I will explain to you what would happen.

This game has, idk, 50 (?) skills. And we only get around 20 skill points to spends. That is perfect because it forces you to choose if you want to be a master at one class [maybe 2] or a jack of all trades and spread them out. If we had the option to switch characters then everyone would do the exact same thing---Create 4 characters, each of which has all the skill points invested into one class and the rest for the universal skills. This means that EVERYONE would go into a match with maxed out skills for every class. Sorry but switching characters in game is just a bad idea.

With all of that being said, I am also against a level cap increase. I think 20 skill points is just the right amount.

On a side note, switching body types is a completely different story. Being able to switch between mini gun and smg, along with running speed and 'armor' just entails adjusting to the flow of battle rather than going into the battle being 'the perfect soldier'. Switching body types I would understand, but even if they didnt i would be fine with it.

You can have up to 10 charecters, but you can only switch to them while at the main menu. The only thing you can switch to in mid-game is the classes not your charecter.

mid-game switches of characters and/or body type is bad. HOWEVER, I would like an option to switch before a match starts. If/when SD adds lobbies, this option could be implemented.

You can only switch sides in freeplay if you play campaign versus I don't think anyone can switch.

So you think we should get more skill points? dont you feel that 20 is more than enough? for me it is. hell, i probably could do with just 15

Yes a function like that would be fine.

I would like the level cap to increase because lvl 20 is easy to get to. And it will be better to atleast max 2 or 3 classes because if your short some and you focused on one class then you cant win. also i think they need to let you chose your own colors for cloths cause its hard to match you cloths how you like. more choices of weapons for lights would be nice cause its always the carb-9 cause no other has proven better for me.

People don't get the concept of being forced to make due with what they have as part of the challenge. Comes from years of being an "army of one" and being able to do everything.

I doubt SD would be foolish enough to muck with either as both are sort of neccesary within the structure of the game, but I hope they pretty much ignore most of the complaints and just deal with things that are actual problems (lag and such) and not just opinions so maybe I'm just a wishful thinker.

I'm confused do you consider lag a problem or an opinion?

These two have raised a couple of very valid points.

A number of players find it frustrating not being able to switch mid-game to the character in their lineup they feel is best suited to the objective at hand. Reading the highlighted sections above could help them to understand why this limitation has been imposed.

This restriction wasn’t included with the intent to aggravate players but was meant to force them into making strategic decisions about their character’s development. Instead of insisting the developers made a huge oversight, players would be better off learning to work within the game's premise. Players should be ready to lead the charge when necessary, but because Brink is first and foremost a team-oriented game, everyone should expect that there will be times when their primary role is to support their teammates.

My suggestion to those who don’t like this aspect of the game is to create separate characters for each map. They can then select abilities geared towards a map’s objectives and develop as powerful an all around character as possible for those particular tasks. This way a player could switch specialties and still have skills in each class that would help them to accomplish the current part of the mission. It would be a lot of work but at least it’s a better solution than feeling the game is broken.

Personally, I have been developing my characters around the DCUPs concept (dual class utility player) which I was lucky enough to learn about on this forum. I’ll use these highly specialized characters when I’m playing with friends and can coordinate our classes going into the match. I’ve also developed an all around character for those times I’ll be playing with bots and the game requires me to be the star -or- when I’m playing with randoms and I need the flexibility to switch between all four classes because my teammates are an unknown quantity.

your game-breaking is correct. 20 points is the right amount. Changing weight mid-game would be fine.
And there was much rejoicing!
