Tell that to the martial artists who use them, such as Chinese martial arts and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qiang_%28spear%29

Ah a spear user eh? I'm not formally trained myself but you give me a spear and I'll manage. I personally prefer halberds, which do appear to be in.

Ok, let me break this down for you.

Nords often fought with a spear and shield. Mammoths were killed using spears. Therefore, spears are relevant to the setting of the game.

You know Nords aren't real right?

Because that's so the same thing as medieval European or Viking spear use, or (as tossed around by some) cavemen poking at mammoths.

For all that Eastern martial-arts spears are blades on the end of poles, they seem to have much more in common with the staff.

It was but one example among the many.

The end result is that not having spears is just downright stupid as hell.

Spanish lancer were renown fighters (my ancestors), German spearman were also renown. Celtic and Gaul were fierce spearmen, Romans told stories of how good they were.

The spear is like any other weapon, if you take the time to master it, you will excel in a fight.

The reason infantry were given spears was because they are cheap, doesn't mean your incapable of learning how to effectively fight with one.

NOT spears in the classical sense = Polearms = Can be used like spears, but also chop, slash, thrust etc.SPEARS didn't make the cut " right now".....that doesn't mean a plain no.
With the amount of topics about spears,i believe bethesda will do something with this ( as a spear ) in DLC or before the game comes out.

I cannot be the only one who saw the spear type weapon in the trailer ,it's around 1:40 i think,in the dungeon with the undead....and it's not an "axe"...it's clearly a polearm,it's even pointed at the end. I am not that bothered about spears,i can do with out them, but also nice if there. But for those that are worried look and read info properly....you'll be able to use spear type weapons. :)
Chill out.

Which why as a spear lover, I'm not freaking out. I like all polearms. I just participate in these topics when people say stupid [censored] like spears aren't good weapons, not like swords herp derp.

Basically, what I can gather, am I'm reading through the lines here - the fundamental difficulty with implementing spears is that it would require a secondary combat system to make it worth implementing. Essentially you just thrust with a spear - there's no point slashing with it, and there's not point hitting someone with it from over your shoulder; unlike every other weapon in the Elder Scrolls universe. I know next to nothing about the game development process, but I would hazard a guess that its quite difficult to have two melee combat systems running side by side, especially for the sake of just one weapon.

For knowing nothing of the development process you are basically right on the money. Grats.

Btw... have you ever heard of Norway? People from there are referred to as Norewgians or just Nords lol.

Yeah.... a cheap and simple weapon (Pointy Stick?) that you could give to a bunch of serfs/peasants/conscripts and say "stand in a big block over there. If horses charge you, everyone point your spears towards them and brace the back end on the ground".

(Unlike, say, swords. Which were expensive to make and took alot of training to be useful with.)

Don't really get the romanticizing/nostalgia about pointy sticks.

Well, just because a unit is outfitted with spears doesn't mean its a group of incompetent farmers, the Greeks used spears with great effect during ancient times, and Sweden used a very successful mix of spearmen and musketeers during the 30 years war all the way up to the end of the Great Nordic War (at the time most other countrys had completely abandoned the weapon in favor of rifles).

Ha, yeah I have heard of Norway, in fact I live with a Norwegian! I've never heard her call herself a Nord. Nordic perhaps.

It wouldn't be that difficult to do spear/or polearm combat...I too ,do not know anything about game development. Spears mainly thrust or are thrown, oblivion had thrust animation, you did it with your last perk with blade,it also did it with the backwards power attack with two handed weapons. Combat and animations have been re-worked,they will be miles better, you will not need separate combat for spears/or polearms. And if we can thrust swords through a persons chest, whats stopping a spear or polearm doing that?....all you need is a thrust animation, which skyrim will have.
I think spear lovers are worried about nothing...but thats my opinion,we'll have to wait and see.

In addition, a thrust animation for a two handed pole weapon could also help staffs to be actual weapons to be fought with. Getting a stick jammed into your gut is not healthy, whether it be pointy or not.

Also, swinging animations wouldn't be totally alien to spears. Getting cracked in the head by a 5 foot long pole is very deadly, what with leverage and all. Just a small force applied to a long stick, at the end, becomes a very strong force.

I don't understand how spears are difficult to balance? Why is it that almost any other fantasy game has no problem with them? Spears are one of the most widely used weapons throughout history, often chosen over swords for their reach, light weight and versatility.

Whoa whoa whoa... hold on!

Which any other fantasy game?
I was thinking about this and realized that there isn't many game that implemented spears properly. In most games (including Morrowind) spears used the same way as any other weapon, they just had a longer reach, you couldn't throw them most of the time.

Closed for clean-up.

The chances of this opening up again are in direct proportion to how long it takes me to do this (right now, I'm not sure the odds look good...)

UPDATE: Stays closed. This topic needs a rest. Everyone needs to calm down a bit before picking this "discussion" up again.

Here's a hint, however - the proper way to disagree with someone wanting something in the game is not through condescending remarks. It's about respect, people. I don't know why that's becoming such a difficult concept to grasp... :shakehead:
