Idea that could be brilliant.

Post » Mon May 16, 2011 7:21 pm

I was actually playing Rock Band 3 today and an idea materialized in my mind: voice activated spells. Rather than being limited to the quick select slots this could offer more fluidity to spellcasting. I wouldn't for instance want to say "fireball!' everytime I cast one, that would get quite old so the standard button casting should still be there, but the option for voice recognition casting would be brilliant. How fun would it be for instance to shout "Lumos!" for a light spell or "Protect!" for a shield? Even whispering "cloak" for invisibility.

It would also make combat more fluid for instance when you could switch from fire, to ice, to poison cloud fluidly. Quick combos could be pulled off flawlessly. And to take it one step further, and this one is a bit obvious...... DRAGON SHOUTS! It would be so much more fun, and immersive to SHOUT these words of power as opposed to simply pressing a button. What do you guys think? Another even cooler option would be rather than being forced to say pre selected commands (such as "lightning storm!") it would be even cooler to be able to record whatever words you wanted for each spell, and then have the computer recognize it. This would be especially useful for custom created spells. At this late stage of development I am guessing its more of a pipe dream but still. Are you listening Todd Howard? Lol.

Minnesota accent plus shotty voice recognition system equals me firing the spell called Shield when ever I say switt and feather when ever I say fetcher. Not for me, much rather have a button.

Not a bad idea at all.
But if you have a weird accent or you have otherwise problems with pronouncing it would svck.
Yea I know problem solved with recording your own words.

So then I'll have to go and buy myself a microphone to cast a spell? And also listen to my brother's annoying voice shouting out spells? Oh wait, record your own words to trigger a spell. How 'bout "FUUUU**!!!"? (no offense intended).

This is the third thread I've seen about the same idea. No,not to say "again!?" ,but I'm a little surprised how many people want it actually.

Personally,I wouldn't want to shout myself. It can startle the people in the house and kind of...silly.Plus,I treat the character I'm playing not as myself, but my precious creation, with different personality and story.
Still, this doesn't need to be put in the game. You can shout all you want as you play I believe XD

I'd really rather not have to have a good microphone to be able to play the game, not to mention I don't want to have my family wondering why I keep shouting strange phrases while playing the game. Besides, if you don't get the pronunciantion just right (Say, due to an accent) such a system could very well prevent the game from recognizing what spell or shout you want, or cause it to get the wrong one. In conclusion, I can't say I really like the idea, and if the option to use it were there, I'd probably not use it. I'd rather just stick to the usual method of casting spells.

Besides, if I don't need to actually swing a sword for my character to do so, why should I need to shout in real life if that's what I want in the game?

Shouting into a microphone when the kids are asleep would not get me many brownie points with the better half, so no.

I'd wake up the kids, make my wife poop her pants, and risk sleeping on the sofa.

I can see accents and language getting bypassed somewhow by the program recognizing the sound, but not the meaning of the words. The player states the name for each action or title or phrase. Long process to set-up...but I've heard of folks spending many hours getting teir character's face just right.

It'd be fun if nobody is around, but doesn't fit my situation - definitly not mandatory.

No. I thought it was impractical when it was first suggested, and I still think it'd be a bad idea. Voice commands are buggy and awkward, and even if Bethesda spent from now until October working on a fluid system, many people would ignore it. It's too gimmicky, would require too much time, and be used by too few people to justify it.

Yep, my brother once played a strategy game (forgot the name) where you have to talk into the mic to command. Half the time he just said "no!" or "cancel that", while I sit on the other side repeating in my head "Please continue, my good sir.."

But I have full respect for this idea. I think it'll a great feature if you live alone so you don't embarrass yourself. :toughninja:

My opinion remains the same as it was the first two times someone posted this "original" idea: No.

No, it wouldn't be great- iffy recognition, iffy microphone, iffy control. Ugh. Dragon shouts disturbing the neighbors in the wee hours of the morning. The only real merit I see personally is the ability to have some friends over, get drunk, and have "spellcasting karaoke night."

Just...no.

Nah, I don't like the idea personally. It's much simpler to hit a key/button and have my character shout. Don't get me wrong though, I'll probably still end up screaming "FUS RO DAH!!!" so much my parents think I'm losing it.

Search Button next time, yes?

Socom had voice control, but I do not want it into Skyrim, as I said in the old thread about this.

I'm surprised at the amount of people rejecting the feature downright because they don't like it. Most of you realize that, if such a feature were added, it'd certainly be optional.. right? No one is going to force you to use it. That, and the game is in English. If they're going to make other "language packs", it certainly shouldn't be too hard to update the voice recognition as well.

That said, I don't think it would affect sales numbers enough that the team at Bethesda would set aside the time required to implement it. Could certainly be added through a mod though (with enough work, that is).

I'd rather now have this. Just keep everything linked to the controller/keyboard please.

This. It's been mentioned many times. I don't want to shout at the T.V. nor does the rest of the community. It seems so.... Nerdy to me. No offense, just feel akward when I yell FIREBALL.

No.
And live this answer without reasons behind it since I really am not in the mood of writing a Chinese wall of text only to kill this silly idea (plus, others are doing the job for me :P).
