Fast travel - Lore justified, or not?

I don't see how it is not "silly". Asking this question is like asking "Why isn't every single step taken by the character recorded in the book? Did he just teleport there, or something?" Sounds silly, doesn't it? I just don't think that it's a legitimate question. But then again, I'm a little cranky at the moment. I can't turn my head to the left without my neck hurting. :(

Edit: Spelling.

Happens to everyone :D

I was only asking to make sure for my RP: which would be a magic hating character. No spells, no magic equipment, nothing. So i didnt want to violate it just because he's "Special".

So my question wasnt "Why isnt every step recorded" it's rather "Is fast travel a game mechanic or some kind of skill?" And the vast majority say mechanic. I probably phrased it wrong.

Yup, fast travel dates back to Arena where you had to use it, no other way to get from Here to There. Of course it could get pretty exciting in Arena. If your character was diseased and out of cure potions odds were he'd be DOA when he hit town. When you did fast travel you got a little pic of a guy on a running horse while the next area loaded and it was possible for months to pass if you travelled from Morrowind to Summerset for instance. No magic involved. Daggerfall had mage ports as well as fast travel but you had to be pretty high level in the mage guild to get the ports, and an optional self-teleport spell to a set marker. Daggerfall fast travel was optional but you'd have had to be a major masochist to avoid it.

I don't know why people object to fast travel in Oblivion. It's totally optional. You don't like it, just don't use it. Why in blazes would you care if anyone else uses it?

In oblivion all the towns are spread out more so fast travel is easier than walking. I think fast travel is just fast forwarding the walking to another area because you have to already have been there

Not true. At the start of the game, all of the towns and the Imperial City can be Fast-Travelled to. Along with this, certain Main Quest locations like Cloud Ruler Temple and Weynon Priory can be Fast-Travelled to without prior knowledge of the location.

It always weirded me out that it would show that animation of the character riding a horse as I went from an island to the mainland.....

Ships are not taxi cabs. You don't tell them where you want to go, you just follow their normal trade routes and get off whereever.

"We make a special trip just for you, same low price."
Those aren't galleons you take. And they're not taxi cabs either because they only go to one of their four, top, destinations.

lol, most of you have no idea what I'm talking about. This is just a shout-out to any other old Daggerfools that might be around, though I suspect I'm the only one here. :P

After someone just explained in details how fast travel was in Arena and Daggerfall?

You're missing the gigantic chasm between gameplay mechanics that can (and should!) be justified and those that cannot. Oblivion's fast travel is one of the latter.

*facepalm*

It's an abstraction. I'll repeat again: FAST TRAVEL IS NOT TELEPORTATION
IT IS ONLY FAST FOR THE PLAYER, NOT FOR THE CHARACTER

Ever seen a movie where a long travel is cut to just a few seconds? (I should rather ask, "ever seen a movie" because unless all the action takes place in the same location, it'll be there.) That's the same thing.

Oh boo-hoo, you can fast travel to places which have roads and signposts leading to them. As for CRT, it's definitely not on your map when you leave the sewers. If you refer to the time the marker appears on your map, it's when you're supposed to go there along with Jauffre and Martin, so you've got company and Jauffre at least knows the way.

OK, I can understand towns and the Imperial City. Of course I do. Saying that you shoiuldn't be able to travel to them straight away is obtuse, I was just pointing it out. Weynon Priory, on the other hand, is idiotic. It would've made more sense if we've been told "It's on the Black Road, leading to Chorrol. (It is the Black Road, isn't it?) You'd be able to see where Chorrol is, so you'd simply travel there, and then look out for the Priory on the way.

As for Cloud Ruler Temple, I don't care if Jaufree knew the way there. That doesn't mean that you should be able to Fast Travel there. I don't see why I can Fast Travel somewhere because a guy travelling with me knows the way, but I can't get somewhere even if someone gives me a detailed description and marks the location on my Map. Eh, we're travelling too far from the original Topic if you ask me. Weren't we discussing whether or not it was Lore justified, rather than whether or not it makes sense?

It seems your question has been answered.
