Disappointed by the Lack of a Story

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 7:43 am

I personally find the story you create to be very compelling and the objectives fit in fine with the story line. I remember some article talking about the environments speaking to the story and whatnot. I feel like it does that well and the audiologs complete it for me. I have always like audiologs as the icing on my cake. More cutscenes and everything would have been nice, but since I dont feel like I do too much repetition in a single mission, the story I create is good enough.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting much story from this game, really, so I guess you could say I'm not totally disappointed, per se.
Maybe because it's a FPS, not an RPG?

Many FPS (to me, anyway) tend to have simplistic plots with
lots of totally awesome, cinematic moments of explosions and action (Assassinate foreign bad guy leader and save the world 7 times in one day, kill these aliens and
save the world, etc).

So I wasn't expecting much in the first place, despite how much people hyped about the potential complexity of the storyline.
The storyline did have potential, but I knew it could not live up to its hype/potential, especially
since the single-player is the same as multiplayer, and the devs didn't want any specific "hero" characters to take over the story,
thus no strong interesting character I can really relate to or care about.

So, eh. I'm kind of disappointed but at the same time, I don't really care. The game is an interesting concept and has good gameplay experience (for me, anyway). ^_^

But! Your characters' adventures (and mis-adventures) could be part of the story. Like how Sims is more of a "make your story based on your characters' experiences in the actual game" kind of game, so maybe that's what the devs were aiming for? And there's always fanfiction and/or fanart, lol. :D

I said in my post, I wasn't expecting there to be a great story, I was only expecting there to be a story.

I just wonder what happened to the little ingame cutscene shown in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMW7kuoIoIE&feature=related, at the very beginning.

I figured that, playing the game solo, you would have AI team mates who would talk amongst themselves as you played through the game, as shown here. Then if you were to play multiplayer, there obviously wouldnt be these little interludes, because the AI are replaced with real people, and you can get straight to the action.

Also, in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qYnAYBVn90&feature=related of that series of videos, I recall there being a longer, much different cutscene than there is in the game now, which also seemed to develop the characters a little more.

Im loving the game, but its a shame that the story aspect didnt follow through, and its obvious that they had some great stuff there, that for one reason or another got trashed. It makes me wonder the reasons for that decision...

Also, is it me, or do the graphics look so much better in that early video of the game? Not that theyre bad now, but I much prefer how it looked before.

O feel like they didnt sell us what they showed us either. The cut scenes from their vids dont even exist in the game. WTF is that? This game just falls sooooo short of what it was supposed to be.

I wouldn't be annoyed if the story had not been brought up while the game was being promoted. A "strong, narrative-driven campaign" was one of the game's selling points. An odd claim by the developers considering that there is no campaign, just multiplayer with bots.

Agreed. Like stated in my earlier post, I (and a ton of other people I'm sure) really wouldn't have minded if the story was completely absent in favor of more content elsewhere. The problem lies in the hilarious over-exaggerrations and blatant falsehoods of a "rich, story driven campaign" where a single player campaign doesn't even outright exist.

There's plenty of story going on. Listen to the Audio Logs. The game will make much more sense afterwards.
