The same books...

Why can't we have epic dragon fights in which we throw newly written books? :P

That... would actually be... disturbingly awesome...

The only problem with your claim, and it's just a tiny, little one, is that you're completely wrong. I've done some actual research into this matter instead of blindly complaining about the same misconception other people do, and the results came up as about 90 books being written for Daggerfall, about 230 being written for Morrowind, and about 140 being written for Oblivion. Oblivion added plenty and the only way 80% of Oblivion's books could have been copied and pasted directly from the books created for Morrowind would have been if Morrowind had 560 books created for it and all of them were copy-pasted to Oblivion. Neither of those requirements are even close to true.

I agree with your general point that Oblivion offered its share of new books.
I dont think however its fair to include in your list DLC specific books, or short lists, or atrocities like 'manual of armor', something that belongs in an actual paper manual and includes unforgettables like : 'Blacksmiths can forge heavy armor from iron, steel, dwarven, orchish [sic], ebony or daedric.' Argh.

Also many an Oblivion book was rare because only attainable through rare loot, like Daggerfall.
The copy/ pasted bookcases everywhere with the same lackluster books in them, the lack of new books that were nothing more than short lists or gameplay hints, together with the rarity of actual new lore or history or 'flavour' books..
Overall this made the game seem less 'booked.'

Bethesda should just have a place where you can send them fan fiction and any other writing you think would be appropriate for inclusion. They could have one guy look over the submissions every now and again and add them into the game if they are decent enough. I'm sure the communtiy could generate a ton of books for the game to make bookshelves a bit more varied.

Interesting idea. The only immediate problem I can think of is fan fiction possibly conflicting with the new material they've already written. Would be a neat idea and a way to "give back" though.

I was hoping you'd post this, Seti! I tried to make this point earlier but it wasn't nearly as strong without your evidence.

I don't get why they didn't just use -all- of Daggerfall, Morrowind and Battlespire's books in Oblivion, that's at least 50 unused books like Fools' Ebony which is 6 parts. Also as many of the books change throughout the games like The Real Barenziah which in Daggerfall was 10 copies for example. They could use the old version as rare, valuable "first editions".

I mean, all of Daggerfall's books are stored in .txt files, so it wouldn't be hard. I guess the reason is that Daggerfall's books are sort-of "dirty"-er than OB's. But honestly who cares? sixual themes.. in books?

Maybe they could use the 'radiant story' aspect and some books would trigger a quest of some sort??

I dont think however its fair to include in your list DLC specific books, or short lists, or atrocities like 'manual of armor', something that belongs in an actual paper manual

In that case, the same pruning should be done for Morrowind. That includes no Tribunal or Bloodmoon books, if you're cutting out "DLC" content (which I don't think is fair, since Tribunal and Bloodmoon, as with KotN and SI, added some nice new lore-rich material). I'm sure other games had its share of useless lists and junk books, so it wouldn't be very fair to prune Oblivion's list and not do the same for the other games.

What about a book written about me? the dovahkihn, after I finish the main quest!.... it'd actually probably end up being to gimmicky.

Most old books should stay, but some might be gone. it's been 200 years, which actually isn't that long AT ALL.

like, maybe the mages guild had a necromancy book burning or something... IDK

I do want to find some old tattered books, that didn't look like they just got off the printing press.

A secret Library probably exists somewhere which contains every book ever written, most likely guarded by a grumpy old Mage and his magic.

The 'Colovian Traders' in Skingrad have a great tome which I'm reading at the moment called 'Children of the Sky', most useful.

Could be pretty hard to pull off but a great idea nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure that we've been told that as a whole (Dwemer ruins aside.) Skyrim will have less advanced technology than Oblivion, so I doubt that would happen.

[snip}

Selbeth, do you have a source for this claim? I am curious because Skyrim is supposed to be the original settlement area by humans and one would hope they've made some advances. Advances where, due to the recent deterioration of the political climate, one would find technology going backwards rather than forwards and the few "elite/rich/powerful soceity classes" would have access to the most advanced technologies. (I"m not talking space flight etc., but more advances in mechanical devices, say clockwork in origin). I remember the dwemer centruions of MW and would luv to see a way to build one from scrap or some such in the game by using a rare tome written by the dwemer and translated, poorly, by some sage and left in an abandoned, burned down tower cellar.

But gentlemen, remember that this is the cold, barbaric, viking-inspired North. Of course there are no books there! The only thing people know how to do there is to run around with swords and axes and pillage stuff.
derp

Seriously though, I couldn't care less. I like reading, but I don't play games to read books. I play games to play games. So to me it doesn't matter, as long as there are a few relevant and interesting books here and there.

This.
But I do want the to know the rest of the ABC's for Barbarians, not just A, B, and C! Since we are surrounded by Nords, I think it would make sence to have at least a completed copy of that book.

But I don't read to much in game, I mostly open and close books to see if it's a skill book. But seeing more interesting titles would be nice.

I'd love to read more from the Lusty? series. Maybe some writings that had been long lost... until now?

The Lusty Argonian Maid II: How Lifts-Her-Tail Got Her Groove Back by Crassius Curio
The Lusty Dunmer Alchemist: Graveyard Confessions by Falanu Hlaalu

I expect that there will be few if any new books. Books require the sort of creative talent that corporations don't know how to budget for.

As proven by the fact that Oblivion had around a hundred less new books than Morrowind, created by a much larger team. Also, there are parts of Daggerfall which just astound me in the amount of time it must have taken to write some of the dialogue or description when you enter areas. Oblivion does that occasionally, but Daggerfall did it constantly. "You walk into the church...incense hangs in the air. But there is a stillness that does not feel like tranquility. It is the stillness of death."

I don't care so much about the amount as I do the variety. Seeing the same books in every shop/house in Oblivion kinda just made me numb to the idea of even scanning over the books I saw after about 20 hours of game play because I already had an idea of what they were.

So either a- same amount of books, more variety or b- more books, more variety. :)

Yea. I would actually like to see fewer (numbers) of books, for instance, only 10 copies of each instead of 20, or w/e it was. And that's of course for fairly common books. But if you had 100 different books, I would only want 400 books in game.

some of those books were from daggerfall and maybe arena.
I'd hate to see them go, but then I'd like to see new books as well as the old.
