Daggerfall with Windows XP

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:24 pm

I have managed to install Daggerfall with DOSBOX, but when the game starts, the movie plays, but then it just freezes on main menu. I can't click any of the options. I want to play daggerfall so bad!!

Edit: I fixed the problem, it was CTRL-F10, my mouse was locked.

If you have not played Daggerfall on an older computer, then let me forewarn you that you are not actually (at least, I'm making a strong guess) experiencing the game the way it is meant to play. I have an older computer I play Daggerfall on sometimes, but I do also have it installed on my newer computer with windows xp, and there are a variety of problems that make the game a lot harder to play. I can't turn left or right when walking or running as smoothly as when playing on a Win95 computer, I have a few mouse issues, and the sound screws up frequently. So if you have an older computer laying around somewhere, it would be worth it to try playing Daggerfall on it.

In DOSBox, set the core to "dynamic" and the cycles to "max", problem fixed! Oh and give it 32MB of memory. You may also try using my front-end, which comes with working configurations for Arena and Daggerfall. It allows you to instantly play any configured game with a single click. You can find links in my signature to the program and the configurations.

Also, the guy claiming problems on XP is either not using DOSBox at all, or has DOSBox configured poorly. It runs as good on this P4 as it does on my ancient P2, and sounds identical. DOSBox is an excellent program at emulating the SB16 and GUS cards.

Can't click? Press CTRL+F10 to lock the mouse to DOSBox.

... How did I miss the edit?

I play Daggerfall with Dosbox on winXP and I also play it on an older computer with a pentium II... Daggerfall plays exactly the same on both of them. DosBox does a fantastic job of emulating an old DOS computor, and all the sound cards with none of the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat nightmares... ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I don't think it is going anywhere.

I have a problem running Daggerfall on Windows XP. I have it installed, but when I launch it, it says "Daggerfall has detected the error 0. Press return to quit."

Does anyone know what's wrong?

Run it in DosBox according to the stickied guide. It also fails to recognize the no cd trick that works in Dosbox.
