What are the races?

Post » Sat May 21, 2011 12:01 pm

Argonians should be cold blooded since they are a lizard race, and as cold blooded lizards they should FREEZE in skyrim!!!!!! Why would they be there????? makes no sence

Did you know that dinosaurs were warm-blooded? And they were lizards. Anyway, well, this is fantasy.

The Argonians will probably just have to stay indoors next to the fire, or dress in extra layers...

I could have sworn that somehwere in the lore it said the Tsecai (sp?) Ascended to dragons but weren't really dragons at the same time... Not like the ACTUAL dragons atleast...
Maybe I'm confused though

How many lizards wear clothes and can talk? lol

Personally, I don't know how anyone could even play as an argonian (at least on your main character)! I can't really relate to a lizard...

@ OP:
If you go ahead an listen to that hour-long, rather old podcast, Todd Howard confirms that there will be 10 races in Skyrim. He didn't specify, but I highly doubt that he will suddenly not only remove a popular race (which they all are) and then add something new.

Arena had 8 races - Argonian, Breton, High Elf, Dark Elf, Khajiit, Nord, Redguard and Wood Elf.
Daggerfall had the same amount, but added Vampirism and Lycanthropy obtainable through gameplay.
Morrowind added Orcs and Imperials, renamed the elves to Mer, kept Vampire and Werewolf (Bloodmoon) and added "Blight disease" as a form of zombification.
Oblivion had all 10 starting races and Vampire obtainable through gameplay. In SI, you could also become the new Daedric Prince of Madness.
Skyrim will probably have Vampirism in addition to the 10 playable races. If the Sheogorath shrine is in the game, he will likely be someone new (the hero from Oblivion).

Probably just as much as Anthony Hopkins can relate to Hannibal Lechter.

There's a difference.

Maybe Anthony Hopkins couldn't completely relate to a psychopathic cannibal, but would he relate more or less to an alien psychopathic cannibal?

I think less. That was my point about Argonians - why choose a 'lizard' over a more relatable race? (I know people do, but I don't understand why) :)

I have never seen anything anywhere that implies that Argonians are cold blooded or actually lizards. They are Reptilian-like, that's not the same as being a reptile tho, they are also Amphibian-like too, but nope, never seen any reference to Argonians being cold blooded, it's likely that their current forms have something to do with licking hist-sap... else wise nothing is known of them.

Because people are more than just their race. I mean, can you not relate to the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, just because he's an actual beast. Or to the blue people of Avatar, just because they're not human?

Relating to someone is essentially to understand them, to understand their situation and to act as if you were one of them. But even if you don't do either of those, you can still pretend to be one of them (successfully) - because you understand their nature (and can thus simulate it).

It's kinda like when Rowan Atkinson thinks that Mr. Bean is the most unpleasent, self-absorbed person he's ever seen. He essentially hates his guts.

Because your character is not YOU. Playing as "myself" in an RPG would just be dull as hell. I want to play as something fun and different. That's why we have all these different races to choose from.

Edit: I want to be a dragon.

Yeah, I know the character isn't you lol. Otherwise most people would be forced to work the bar at the inn for 100 hours of the gameplay before they could afford their shiney armour, then they'd die in the first fight they have... :/

My point is that I like to be able to relate to my character (the main one that is). And it surprises me how many people are happy to run around as a reptile...

__

@ Malavok,

Good point about relating / understanding. Again though, the level of understanding is improved (for me) if I am vaguely human. I don't have the same problem with the elves, just the Khajit and Argonian races...

I'd be looking for a sandwich and internet if I played Skyrim as me.

Considering that the physiological traits of Argonians are determined by the Hist Trees (rather than evolution or from the gods) than there is no reason to say that Aronians are cold-blooded even though they are indeed 'lizard-like'.
That.

Come on. I'm so sick of this misconception.

Argonians are not cold-blooded. They are not even lizards in any meaningful sense.

These are "lizards" that are directly descended from sentient trees, that walk, that talk, that cast lightning from their finger-tips.

Considering the game isn't out for over 7 months, I'm surprised to see how keen some of you guys are to announce when you think threads are dead.

Guess what, when the thread has really 'run it's course' it will naturally drop into obscurity...

and it will only drop into obscurity when people NOT post in a thread that has already been answered. :teehee:

So your problem isn't that the thread is dead, but rather that it may be derailed.

The discussion I was having about Argonians didnt require a whole new topic imo.

This forum already has moderators who can decide when something needs to be forced to finish (ie locking). Any actual fan of TES or Skyrim wouldn't want to abruptly cut off discussions about it - especially given how long there is till release!

The races are exactly the same as the previous games.

Oblivion had ten races and in skyrim there are supposed to be ten races. Skyrim is also supposed to have all the same races oblivion had.
That does mean that their are no new races, correct?
