Quirky Perks

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:36 pm

With classes being replaced by a perk system, it makes me wonder what perks with be available for some of the quirkier skills.
In other words, what cool things will be made available by training in acrobatics, athleticism, mercantile, etc..

For example, one perk for athleticism may be that the ability to climb things assassin creed style.
Or if they decided to bring back the court system from Daggerfall, could a speechcraft perk be debating?

What other abilities could you see as potential perks?

They better have cool perks for non-combat stuff. That's half the fun of the game!

I can see potential for a lot of fun smithing, alchemy, and other perks. Maybe Speechcraft and Mercantile will be interesting... or at least used.

Perks aren't exactly like they where in fallout. They are smaller and more practical. :)

Speechcraft perk (super high level): You can negotiate with human and dremora enemies instead of having them kill you on sight.

What do you guys think?

I agree, there's plenty of direction they can take regarding armoring, like being able to forge certain materials (i.e. steel over iron).
It's been confirmed by howard that 3 skills are being removed (one being mysticism).
I hope they came up with some awesome way to incorporate speechcraft or mercantilism because I've always found them pointless.

You can anyways in Oblivion, charm them or get your personality to 255 and speachcraft to 100 (that's what I had, lower values may work too.). In Morrowind you couldn't though (unless you used mods).

Which is a good indication that the perk system may svck. I liked that Bethesda games didn't have a damn tallent tree, and from what I've heard, that's what Skyrim's perk system will emulate. Yay.

A good quirky perk in Oblivion was the backflips you would do with 50 acrobatics.

No the oposite in my view. More practical means they'll be more realistic or better thought out, more meaningful,or however you want to look at it.
Some perks in fallout were ( in my opinion ) cheesy,or perks you didn't really need. Alot of them ,if not most were for vats. Alot of people played without vats, which means alot of perks were not needed...in my view. We'll see when we get more info, but because a perk is smaller, doesn't mean it's more useless. :)

Can't forget that they added enchanting so they actually merged/removed 4 skills. The general consensus of the ones that are gone are Mysticism (confirmed), Athletics (thought to be merged with acrobatics), security (merged with sneak), and either both the armor skills merged into one or Speechcraft and mercantile merged. Either way there should be a ton of non combat perks.

Edit: @st frantic: Agreed. Many guides for Fallout 3 will suggest different perks and the same ones are always listed as take or never take. Things like Radiation resistance were always a never take perk, while things like the perk of having your AP reset if you killed an enemy in VATS was always a must (provided you used VATS). With them being realistic and tailored to specific weapons and skills you will be more inclined to choose ones based on what you play as, not choose many of the same perks every game.

I would say that the perk that they were talking about in the PC Gamer preview about being able to have more influence over the opposite six has to be one of the Speechcraft perks. That would be my guess, anyway.

There will be a ton of non combat perks,it's a major part of the leveling system now, whether it's axe, smithing or whatever. In my opinion, what bethesda is doing regarding skills, ranks, and perks will be the best system yet. :)

I have an idea for a perk.My perk
allows you the option of kicking in doors with a
very easy lock. But you are more likely to alert
the guards. You may also upgrade this perk so
you can kick in doors with an easy lock at 2nd level
and a medium lock at 3rd level.

@Cactus216 (Damn this one minute post limit): There has been a lot of requests for a lock bash system to return. The general consensus is it would be based on the weapon skill of whatever you hit it with. But if they made it a perk I am cool with that. It should be one of the first perks you can get though.
