[REQ] Bosmer with sharp teeth

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:47 pm

I traditionally don't touch Bosmer much, as a race, but looking into lore, they are much more interesting then Oblivion lets on...

So, would anyone be interested in making some sharp Bosmer teeth? Let me provide some images, so as to be clear...:

It would be great if a character using the sharp teeth could replicate the mischievous, slightly-demented smile in the images.

Come on! How could you resist a smile like that?

Or, you know, if no one shares my enthusiasm for this, make suggestions on how I may be able to accomplish this on my own. I wouldn't be sure where to begin. What mesh would need altering? Would I need to retexture? How can I get the player character to change...and how do I get NPCs to change....to the sharp-toothed form? And can such a change be gender specific if wanted?

Personally I think it's a cool idea, Bosmer are pretty downplayed in oblivion. I have to admit I openly dislike the new imperial library's condensed pages... alot, passionately, etc... Anyway back when it had an acceptable amount of lore and information on Bosmer (and everything else) it was a cool read. Anyway heres a teeth mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10674, maybe you can work with is from there. I had a better teeth mod lying around at some point, but I don't know what happened to it sorry.

Not being too specific here, but:

You'd need a new mesh, not a replacer, since Bosmer (I'm fairly sure) share a teeth mesh with the human races. The existing mesh would be a good starting point, but you would need to rename it and modify the Bosmer race if you want Bosmer ONLY to use it. Whether a new texture was needed would be up to you; after reshaping, installing the mesh etc. you could see whether the old texture still looked good on it, or needed tweaking (again, the old texture would probably be a decent starting point, unless you're fast and fancy with making new textures). Once you have a mesh and at least a trial texture, you can modify the Bosmer to use the new mesh. There is a race creation tutorial on the web somewhere; the information in there can also be applied to changing vanilla races. Once you have modified the Bosmer race and, of course, activated the plugin you created, the teeth should appear on all Bosmer (both PC and NPC, including existing savegames) without any further effort.

I don't know if the change can be gender-specific, but I strongly suspect not. To find the existing mesh, you'll need to know how to unpack BSAs (OBMM can do it), and follow the folders down through Data/Meshes/Characters/... to the appropriate mesh.

I think this is a cool idea too... I'm a little saddened by how culturally nondistinct the races are in Oblivion. Things would be more interesting if the Khajiit were always doing odd things during full moon, the Argonians were constantly splashing about in the rivers, and sharp-toothed Bosmer refused to eat any plant products.

*Edit: clarity*

Thanks for the replies. Glad to see there is some interest in this then.

I guess I'll crack out blender and the CS once I have the chance (my oblivion comp is currently down though :brokencomputer: ,). I doubt I'll be able to do much of real quality, but we'll see I guess. In the meantime, I'd like to hear from anyone who has done modding work on vampires and see how they have adjusted the fangs to their liking. It would be useful to get some advice from someone with first-hand experience with teeth.

What mesh would need altering?

You don't need to change the teeth meshes. Teeth textures are what really matter.

Would I need to retexture?

Yep, you'd want a texture that shows a row of pointy teeth.

How can I get the player character to change...and how do I get NPCs to change....to the sharp-toothed form?

If you edit the vanilla Wood Elf race in the CS, all the wood elves in the game will be affected including the player character.

And can such a change be gender specific if wanted?

Face data (except for ears...) is not gender specific, so no. Both sixes use the same teeth.

Here's a suggestion. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16366 have http://tesnexus.com/downloads/images/16366-2-1207326117.jpg. I'd use theirs. Two things though:

1. Their gums are greenish. I'd make a recolored version for wood elves.
2. The teeth texture is meant for a merged teeth mesh, so you'd want to either split the teeth texture into 2 (upper teeth and lower teeth) to make them fit separate teeth meshes OR more simply make wood elves use merged teeth. All the vanilla races in my install use the merged teeth and mouth already, so that would be a non-issue for me.

Assign the pointy teeth textures to wood elves in the CS and you're theoritically done.

If you already have a cosmetic mod that affects wood elves, you'll want to either tag your little teeth mod with the correct tag (R.Teeth I would think) and import it in your bashed patch OR make the teeth changes in said cosmetic mod. Else the two mods will, y'know, fight to the death and all that.

I'd love to see that transformation of said race.

Will it be a private mod, or a "relz"? :)

Ah! Now re-texturing is something I can do! Thanks!

Hmm. I guess we'll have to wait and see, won't we? :)

I'd definitely be interested as well Fiore! I'm all for any mod that expands game lore :)
