Old People need to walk badly

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:15 pm

In a harsh place like Skyrim, you don't get worn out and withered.

You just die.

Yep, people don't live long here in Skyrim. We don't have all that fancy medical technology you Imperial pigs enjoy.

Worst companion quest ever! XD

Yeah, I think having old people, young people, and children running around with different egos and cultural differences would truly bring life, variety, and fun to the game.

I would like to see walking sticks, but don't think that elder people should walk badly.
I know personally a lot of people who are pretty damn old and walk and act perfectly normal.
Old people that walk funny is a stereotype I would like TES to avoid.

Yes, but where do you live? If you are referring to life in a Superpower, which is unlike any kingdom that's ever been seen in the ancient world, then people do indeed walk straight even into old age, and very rarely does that stereotype get seen in those countries. But dude, I live in China, a place very much the same as it always was (although it's just now changing for the better) .... and here, almost 50% of all old people I see walk hunched over. The further from the city you go, it's more like 3 out of every 5 old people are hunched over. So it's very much in line with the stereotype, and that's a stereotype for a reason. These people lived hard lives and had to wear out their backs carrying water, and didn't have doctors or the internet to tell them how to do it properly to save their backs.

I'm sure in Skyrim, it's much the same. So I agree with the OP, because it's a reality.

Just not where you're from. Hahahaha.

If we push them over they should have a small chance of breaking a hip and as part of the radiant AI the townsfolk would have to save up the money for a hip replacement. Untill enough money was saved the old person would walk badly yes. I think this would make the game better than oblivion

It would be nice to see some old people look sick and tired while walking but not everyone of them. There are some old people in real life that are in better shape than young people.

I think this is a really good idea. Sterotypes or no, the older you get hte bigger are the risks of health issues. Therefore it would help with the immersion factor if some older people (and maybe even some younger soldiers) had problems walking

I strongly disagree with the topic. For one, not all old people have trouble walking. For two, with magic and alchemy it's possible it wouldn't be as much of an issue.

I like how several of the posts in this thread get upset about the idea of elderly people, living in what is essentially northern Europe during the middle ages.

Many of whom have been doing back breaking physical labor for their entire lives, would walk like they have bad backs or have gotten a hacking cough from pneumonia or TES equivalent.

Don't forget that The Nine don't favor everyone, and healing costs money.

It makes more sense IMO to have the majority of them walk with a stick, cane, or their grandchildren beside them.

Then again there shouldn't be very many old people because old then was 50 or so.

I doubt the devs will put old people with canes in the game but it would be nice to see.

Yes! I would also like to see some http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Z5o5nxCbCeg/Ru54GxVgCcI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/ktN66w4zGpk/s320/beggar.JPG&imgrefurl=http://victoryachasegoestotherapy.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-much-do-you-make-beggars-salary.html&usg=__Rm7nsPtKpCZl2wss7l_skG7T6Dk=&h=320&w=210&sz=21&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=NHyNhoDtmmWicM:&tbnh=147&tbnw=96&ei=gBOLTau9L5OFhQfF9qzFDQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfantasy%2Bbeggar%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1447%26bih%3D662%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=430&oei=gBOLTau9L5OFhQfF9qzFDQ&page=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0&tx=11&ty=50 with amputated limbs and skinny beggars. It's a cool idea and it'd certainly add immersion to the world, but I can't see it being added in. It's too small and unimportant.

I gotta ask, whats up with everyone expecting extreme realism from a fantasy-universe? In most cases these suggestions does not add anything to the game.

I really cant understand why anyone would want Bethesda to use money&time on things like:

- old people walking badly
- you shouldnt be able to run forever
- clothes to keep you warm in Skyrim
- every item should have a usefull purpose (unlike the much loved paint brush in Oblivion. )
- have children
- be a child
- have a wife
- having a pet
- decorating your own house
- have a garden you grow things in
- you have to eat
- swimming in cold water should affect.....
- ability to write a book
- death sentence(to the man who will/has saved the skyrim)
- innvite NPC over to your house for cake and tea.

And jesus [censored] christ the list goes on and on. There is no end to all these suggestions.

I totally agree and for those people who want that crap I heard sims medieval is out this week.

There's not much health care in TES (apart from praying to the Gods), so chances are you wouldn't live long enough to get decrepit. And frontier people are more hardy. Daniel Boone was still going on hunting trips aged 80.

A few thoughts...

1) Don't stereotype: yes, bodies can change as well as mobility. However, to break the stereotype, my next door neighbor is 84, still climbs his roof to shovel off the snow and chops firewood. :lifter:

2) It'd be interesting to actually have some depth to the characters, both physically and personality-wise

3) Eh, but not something I'd be too interested in overall when compared to adding depth of dialogue, story, or brain exercise.

4) Howzabout folks in Dwemer self-propelled wheelchairs! It's not too far fetched...wasn't there a Dwemer in a wheelchair in Morrowind? Ohhh and then I could knock off the owner, steal the chair, use crafting to soup it up with storage and a supercharger....Hey! Quit looking at me like that! :stare: ;)

Exactly what I think!

And why not have Fast-Food big city?... Exactly, we don't want stereotypes.

But maube some few people (young and old) can walk with a cane.

Then how come there were like a million old people living in tents in the wasteland in Fallout?

No, you got me wrong.
I sad lot of people, not all of people.
Of course there are people who walk baldy here.
The point was just that I don't think it's that important to have old people who walk badly and can live without them.
Still, if they decide to go with it and do then OK, but personally think that it could be a waste of time over something too small.

I see the argument that since life will be harsh, that there won't be old people (simplified)

"Old" is a subjective term, right? Ask a younin'and 30 is old. Ask a 50 year old and it's 80. When there are shorter lifespans, doesn't "old" scale down to that age which nears the expected end of life?

I'm old, I walk perfectly well without a cane. I ought to get one so I can hit all the kids in this thread who think old folks should be all hunched over and using a cane. :frog:

And now I'm grumpy.

Hear hear, Skyrim's eldery people need to be grumpy!
