Source Code/Modding

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:22 pm

Since Brink is on a modified version of the ID tech 4 engine would we have to wait for ZeniMax to release the source code for that before we could get it for Brink, if SD does decide to release it for Brink?

"At the QuakeCon 2009, John Carmack said that he planned to petition ZeniMax Media to release the id Tech 4 source upon the release of Rage (expected in 2011)."

Excuse my excitement over the idea of getting my hands on the source code..... Quake Brink anyone? :)

I am looking forward to map editing with id Tech 4, but I didn't really expect it to happen first with a non id game. I do not think it is up to SD, but up to the licensing of the id Tech engine.

What I am somewhat afraid of is that they have bound themselves into a situation where there will never be any modding/map making tools available for Brink.

Rage uses the new ID tech 5 engine not 4. Brink is on Id tech 4 heavily modified.

I know that Darksider, apparently when ID tech 5 comes out (Rage, September) ID tech 4 would become open source, supposedly..

hmmm, the source code for ET:Quake Wars is available so I guess SD could put out the source for Brink anytime?
