Is it just me, or when playing an engineer when you are repairing or fixing, or building stuff, and there is a gun fight around you, have u guys been noticing that it get very quiet?

Not really. I do know that most people don't shoot me though because my teamates are laying down fire.

Yes i have noticed that, i also notice at times im not being shot at when im doing said actions.

I also have noticed sometimes die when my health bar emptys.
