A New World

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:50 pm

So, I've been playing Morrowind for a while now, and have been playing around in the editor and getting the feel of it.

I've been getting these great ideas for a new world, but I don't wish to do it in the fashion that many tutorials suggest, like making an island off Morrowind's coast.

I want to create a brand new world from scratch, but still use all the things that would be in the editor as if I loaded the main Morrowind.esp.

How would I go about accomplishing this?

NOTE: Yes, I know I should start small and work my way up, and that is exactly what I intend to do... After I get this taken care of. :)

Wellll.... One of the best ways to start off is with a unchanged world, like thepal's blank, All of the objects are in there (with some exceptions like most non-skill books) then you can either raile the land by hand or get one of several utilities that raise the landscape to some predetermined configuration.

You're talking a really long -term commitment though... be warned. I'm working on one and it's already been two years or so with no end in sight.
Of course, I'm working alone, an it's become my chief hobby and passtime, and I'm in no rush to finish soon, if ever. You're more like to be happy if you put together a team and divide up the work. Then you're only looking at a couple of years of trying to co-ordinate the whole thing.

Anyway, like in MIB "Yeah, it's worth it... If you're strong enough..." :)

Don't let me discourage you, though if you want it go for it, eh? Good luck!

Thanks Neildarkstar. I wasn't aware that thepal's blank .esp still contained all the game objects.

As for the long term commitment... I have time :). I've had a vague idea of what I've wanted as an RPG for a while now, so its pretty solid in my head as to the basics. Morrowind would be perfect to allow me to create said RPG without having to learn coding from a Dummies book, or going to college (which isn't an option at 14  ).

I may get a team, probably some friends that would be willing to DL Morrowind to work on it. Even if it takes years to complete, it'll be worth it in the end (even without profit). Becoming successful in something as large as this is a great feat, even if it took years.

Thanks for the information, and good luck to you on your project. :)

I know I'm probably going to sound like an idiot for asking this but I'm prepared for that.

I've downloaded ThePal's Blank ESP file, but am unaware as to how I am supposed to load it up. I've placed the ESP in Morrowind's DATAFILES folder, where the other files are (Tribunal, Tribunal.bsa, Bloodmoon, Bloodmoon.bsa, Morrowind, Morrowind.bsa), and tried loading it, but it didn't appear in the list when I clicked load in the CS.

EDIT: Sorry, meant the Trib/Bloodmoon/Morrowind BSA not ESP... <.<

If you placed it in the data files folder, it should show up... unless it's got to do with your operating system. Are you using windows vista or 7?

Windows 7

I placed the ThePalsBlank into the DATAFILES folder, and closed it. Then I opened TES and clicked load, and only Morrowind appears.

=\ I'm failing my project before it has begun...

I only have dinosaurs, XP pro and even a windows 2000 machine, so I won't be much help. There are a lot of people here who can tell you how to fix it up, or maybe check in the hardware/software forum for a thread on 7 installation of mods.

If you are using Windows 7 I strongly recommend installing Morrowind to a custom directory that won't be affect by permissions/UAC so that you can avoid these problems altogether. Namely, this means don't use the default Program Files directory.

I know there are people who will disagree and say that you shouldn't have to do such and such to get it working, but it's just not worth the hassle for me to deal with that sort of stuff. If I want to be secure, I boot into Ubuntu. Besides, Morrowind isn't going to hijack your computer.

Good luck!

Solved the problem. I went into the blank's properties and set it to open with TESCS by default, and now it runs. :P

You're in the Bethesda forums.. Idiots is what we is!

Well, good luck with this. This'll either be finished in a good few years (5ish) - or you'll go insane. Or both. Or you'll just give up.

I remember my first big mod. It was a massive island south of Vvardenfell... :)

I lost it when my old omputer died, though.

Wait, wait, what? There's already a "blank world" mod?

Ach. And when I'm nearly done hand-paving the entire world and deleting everything in it

Return to III - Morrowind
