Skyrim Water

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:52 pm

Im currently playing oblivion to see some topics people haven't talked about and i was wondering how Skyrim will deal with underwater physics because in oblivion you couldn't see 3 feet in all directions without the mod so in Skyrim i hope they fix that if not i will deal with it. What do you guys think?

As a PS3 player I hope they make the water more clear like the pc mod ... And hopefully you cant swing a weapon and move underwater just as fast as you can on land.

I think this underwater view distance and graphics as well is perfect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW2zCy90TEY

Oblivion's underwater view distance was realistic, but it was poorly written (just a fog wall basically, there should have been a smoother transition and more underwater lighting effects). But then again, Oblivion is pretty old so you can't really blame them.

It would be nice to be able to see a bit further, but what I'm more concerned about is will there actually be a good reason to go underwater in TESV. Because in Oblivion the only thing in the water was the occasional, and very rare, fish.

You kidding? This has already basically been done for Oblivion. The OBGE guys are working on a water replacement, both water and underwater.
Here's how it looks (or looked, it's a bit old): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCoSw7hGAF8

There's underwater god rays, refraction, caustics and chromatic aberration there. It doesn't really hurt the performance as far as I know and from what it looks like.

Yeah, the bubbles are a bit of disappointment. Looks very 2D :D
But haha, even Crytek can make mistakes in terms of graphics eh?

Well I don't mind murky water, it shouldn't look very clear underwater. They could make it a bit more realistic though, because in Oblivion it just looked like underwater fog. And they should make the sea itself a bit more interesting, with shipwrecks and treasures on the sea floor, and maybe some hidden caves. And more variety in water life too :turtle: .

I want the pixel shader underwater that warbles the screen. Sure, have the view distance be pretty far if you must but still, please warble the screen via underwater distortions (warm pockets, cold pockets, saltwater/freshwater streams not mixing, etc) ... I myself would prefer it to be a little foggy under there as I don't think when you open your eyes underwater that you can see very clearly unless you're using a Mask and Snorkel. I don't wish to see those items in a fantasy game, so my vote is for slightly blurry and slightly warbled via pixel shaders. And I want a "surfacing" animation, so when you leave the water, it clears up unevenly and not all at once, so it imitates how the water rolls off your eyeballs restoring your vision. Or maybe you rub your eyes with your fists to clear your vision. Just something. I always hated coming out of the water and being able to immediately see everything perfectly... it's farscical.

fishing is rumored (if not confirmed my facts might not be solid) so if it is it would make sense that they would work on the water if it was an integrated feature in the game
