Level Cap Questions.

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:52 pm

I was pondering the softcap Beth put in Skyrim. For those of you who dont know about it, after lvl. 50, you level up very slowly.
Anywho, I thought about the possibility that the softcap might affect the rate at wich your skills progress. Do you think this will happen? Do you want it to happen?

Yes, I want it to be more difficult, but I don't want to take two or three weeks to level up once. Maybe two or three days would work.

I love your sig by the way. :foodndrink:

'I'm stupid', and 'once you're the best it's hard to get better'.

LOL! Who could resist the call of the stupid button! I'll admit, I pressed it.

But yeah I like that they get harder after level 50... I mean c'mon, by level 50 your probably gonna be an uber badass anyway... Any more is just overkill.

I like a challenge and F03 I got to the top way too fast and I still had tons of content to do but it just was not the same without earning exp. I am glad that it goes slower so that if I hit the top too fast........I still have a reason to keep playing the same game.

I think I may need to clarify on what I meant by "level up very slowly", i didn't mean "it takes longer for your skills to increase", i meant "you have to increase your skills more in order to level up". Just thought there might be some confusion there. :)
EDIT: in the on topic side, i think it would be cool if your skills could increase past 100 and keep going for as long as you please, and not really have much of an affect on you except for that feeling of pride that I would certainly get from increasing my skills to 200 or some big number. And it would give me a reason to play after my skills got to 100, since i always have to start a new game once i do that. For some reason it always feels pointless playing Oblivion or Fallout when all my skills are maxed and i cant accomplish much more than killing stuff and getting rich. It would also let people lvl up to huge numbers like 300 or something since you can still level up after all skills are 100. Wouldn't it be cool if you could have a profile that you could play basically for the rest of your days without hitting a max level? Sounds like a blast to me!

I like number 2 because one of the things I loved about Oblivion is how the game never ends. Fallout 3 is similar but they have a max level and what's the point in playing the game when you've done everything and have reached level 30. If we had the cap at 50 and depending on dungeons the game would end. Basically what I'm saying is yes you should start leveling up slower at level 50 but don't end the game at that point.

Super uber man.

After a couple hundred hours playing the game and building my skills, I want to be able to thoroughly TROUNCE absolutely anything that dares cross my path. Including dragons.

Oh, and I want to theoretically be able to get to level 65535. In other words, *no level cap* is a good thing afaic.

If you mean it by an artificial slow-down on the exp-bar, then no.

Higher skills are already harder to increase, so I think that would slow things down after 50, where most of your skills are already pretty high.

I can't vote for any of those choices.

To me, it's much more complex than any of those choices allows. I think that skills (and attributes) should not only slow down at some point in the game, but that at least some of them should regress, and potentially that any of them should if not regularly used.

For instance - if I play a character who wears heavy armor and runs around just bashing skulls in with a warhammer, I expect him to develop high skills with those items and high strength and endurance. If, after some time, the same character sets aside his armor and his weapons and dons a robe and spends all his time honing magic skills, his armor and weapon skills and the associated attributes should, in my opinion, actually decrease.

I'd also like to see fairly rigid, race-specific caps. One of the things I've never cared for about Oblivion is that the only real differences between the races (aside from aesthetics) are only temporary advantages. Sure, a male Nord starts out with more strength than a female Bosmer, but by late in the game, the male Nord tops off at 100 and the female Bosmer tops off at... 100. So early in the game the male Nord is stronger, but late in the game, they're exactly the same. Entertaining though it might be in a sense, I just don't think it's realistic that Mindi is exactly as strong as Hale (two of my characters - see my sig).

There's also an issue of age. As a middle-aged guy, I can attest to the fact that I have less strength, less endurance, less speed and less agility than I had 20 years ago. In part, that's certainly because I'm less active than I was (see my fighter turned mage example above), but in part that's just a consequence of age. Over time, the body wears out.

And those are just a few quick points - this whole aspect of things is immensely complex, really. And I simply hope that Beth does a better job of addressing it than they have. We'll see....

I agree with you on most of what youre saying except for the age part. If I want to be an old and wise kung fu master or something and start out a 70-year old dude, I would have an extreme disadvantage at the start of the game, and i think games should start out fairly easier than the rest of it to help beginners get a good start and let the veterans have a few glorious moments uberness before they get owned by a dragon. :flamethrower:

And i would prefer race specific caps be somehow optional. I may want to RP a wood elf bodybuilder you know...
All in all great idea.

Wait...uber like in Oblivion? In Oblivion leveling up makes the game harder. It's almost like you're leveling down.
Anyways, I prefer leveling up at a steady pace regardless of your level. I suppose it makes sense to "cap" it so you can max out your skills at a lower level.

So if you're a Bosmer you level up faster if you work on the marksman skill instead of destruction? That makes sense I guess.
