Softer Sound Bug:

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:11 pm

Recently I noticed something was off with the sounds in my game. At times, sounds like unsheathing a weapon or footsteps might become "softer" or "lower quality" and then back to normal. Music is fine, no other game seems to have this problem, and it only became noticeable recently, which is why I think this might be mod-related. My sound-card is a Realtek HD Audio Output if that helps.

Come to think of it, I've been having similar sound-related problems like random lowering of voice volumes and then returning back to normal ... but dismissed it thinking it's a driver glitch (cause I'd recently updated my realtek HD to 2.54)

Didn't think anything in-game could affect sounds cause the only "mod" I updated/changed was OBSE :)

(now that you mention it ... All natural's thunderstorms seem really loud all of a sudden though. Maybe I never noticed it before or something)

I have that too ... but I know the cause on my system. I suspected it was mod related until I took a break from Oblivion and played other games and heard it again. Then I thought the 100 dollar Creative card I bought was going bad in less than one year.

Then I got a nice set of Sannheiser noise reducing headphones and never heard the issue when wearing them.

It is my sound system and powered amp - an old hunk from about 8 years ago. I play CDs or DVDs other games and so on and the the sound goes up and down.

The thing about my issue is that the sound levels aren't actually affected; If I unseath a weapon, the sound might be normal, but if I do it again, it might sound softer, etc. Same thing with spells. Voices and music seem to be alright.

Are you perhaps sneaking in one instance and not in the other?

It happens while I'm not sneaking as well, so I dunno.

Started a new game in Vanilla, and everything was 100% perfect. I'm guessing this means the problem isn't hardware related.

Well things like this - sometimes best to have the character wait out a cell respawn in an isolated cel, maybe rebash the patch without sound tags then with again, test in several different locations, etc.

Well when I check the 'Import Sounds' function while rebuilding the patch, there doesn't seem to be any source mod/file. I'll try waiting for a respawning cell, but I don't really know how that would fix anything. Thanks alot though!

Well just taking pot shots at this ...

Does it happen when your character is alone or when NPCs are dialoging near you?

Does it happen on cell reload?

Are other sounds increasing and decreasing.

Do you recognize any patterns?

1-Nope, Dialogue is fine.
2-I don't think so really.
3-Yes, restoration, fireball, sheathing and slashes seem to be affected.
4-Happens often after I unsheathe a weapon, or if I cast a fireball again. Not always though.

Have you checked your sound settings?

At least my sound panel has a setting for automanaging sound levels - what this does is that it caps the maximum sound. So any loud sound gets usually reduced by its level, to the cap value or something like that - and at the same time any other less lound sounds playing get reduced by THEIR level to correctly compare to the loud sound playing (which was just capped and thus less lound than it was supposed to be).

In effect, you could get fluctuating sound volume levels depending on the background sounds, like wind etc. I hate that setting and never use it, obviously. :P

Hmmm, well I discovered something interesting about this problem;
It seems to be most severe in Public Interior cells, such as Testing-Hall or The Merchant Inn's bedroom. Outside of those cells, the problem seems non-existent.

Which is why I suggested testing in various places and on cell loads.

If I found that bug - I probably wouldn't do anything more than a quick search in edit for what alters those cells then if any found deactivate until the issue goes away - but then maybe not as it seems minor.

Well here's something else;
I noticed that if an NPC speaks, or if my character gets hit, the sounds return to their original "quality". This problem just seems to be getting odder.
Also, and just in case, here's my full dxdiag log. It might help:

YES! I've fixed the issue (hopefully) by setting hardware acceleration down to basic. Hopefully this will help.

I'm wondering - did you have this issue when using headphones?

If this is what I may be experiencing even though I may get it when listening to a CD?

If hardware acceleration is possible on Vista? - quick search ... I'm seeing it doesn't have it and therefor no need to turn it off.

I don't know, I haven't used headphones in a while. I'll let you know though :)
