Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:23 pm

The amount of mods is just unreal!!! WOW. Pretty excited to be honest because this is an amazing game. I brought it from steam.

I am clued up on how to install a mod but I mean I have no idea what mods I should be getting lol.

Is there set mods that everyone should get?

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any input :)

If you've played without mods on the xbox, the two big ones I'd recommend are OOO and MMM.

You can find them as active threads on the mods forum. Since you're primarily asking about mods I'll recommend a move to that forum after I finish typing this post.

There is also FCOM which adds OOO, MMM and more, but I think that's overkill and may be difficult to install or maintain. OOO+MMM is enough.

You may also want to consider Natural Environments and if your PC is powerful enough the Quarl 3 Retexturing. Also some of Koldorn's cave and aylied ruin retextures.

A couple of small mods I think are essential are a mod to keep that perv Fighters Guild Porter from following you around, and also a keychain mod. And maybe a mod that improves the user interface (HUD).

That should be more than enough to get you started. With those mods, it may seem like an entirely different (and hopefully better) game. Good luck!

I would recommend starting with (much!) smaller mods, and just get used to installing, maybe uninstalling too, in general.

Grab Oblivion Mod Manager and Wrye Bash. BOSS, as well. If you become familiar with BAIN installation, you'll be a much happier mod user - trust me!

Actually, just have a read through http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/, and follow as much of the advice as you can stomach. But start off slow! :)

Generic post first:

List of lists:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?showtopic=1010109
Top 100
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/top/alltime.php
Files of the months:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/filesofthemonth.php
Hall of fame:
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.HOF

List of topics exactly like yours that have already been answered: (You can also find my favorites in post #4)
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1072579-the-any-mods-list-of-topics/

If you want any further help I suggest you tell us about yourself; what you like and what you're looking for... Here's some questions to get you started:

Have you played Oblivion already?
What sort of things interest you?
What type of Character do you usually play? (good/evil, theif/mage, roleplayer/random-no-story-hack-and-slasher?)
Are there specific types of mods you think would interest you? (Quests, graphic mods, gameplay mods, overhauls, etc.)
When did you leave?
What things bothered you in unmodded Oblivion?

Since you're new to modding I wouldn't recommended going overboard. Just get a few small mods and slowly add to it. Just make sure you don't get any buggy or massively conflicting mods, because later on when you start adding more complex mods that can kind of screw you over.

A mod that adds a chest with a sword in it? Those type of things will usually cause no problems. Deadly Reflex/Unnecessary violence, or poorly made dirty mods? Those should be pretty scary for you (well dirty poorly made mods are scary for everyone.)

Some recommendations of mods kind of like what I described:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25844
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26196
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3409
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21862(good for troubleshooting)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20736
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25462 (might have some compatibility issues with other guard mods like RGO, but nothing too serious)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21989 (Quest mod that only adds one NPC and one cave to the world, but the cave leads to a huge new world space.... In my experience, unless it's poorly made or uses complex scripting quest mods are usually pretty safe.)

There are so many great mods that I could recommend to you but the easiest thing to do, is to go on google and search up something like oblivion realism mods or whatever other kind of mods you are interested in. Searching for mods in a genre is the easiest way to find lists of great mods and it's how I found many amazing mods that I use today. Also, make sure that you have necessary tools like the Oblivion Mod Manager and Oblivion Script Extender.

Some of my favorite mods:
*Better Cities (Might be confusing with all the esps depending on which version you can find. Make sure you read what other mods may be required in the readme.)
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO) (Changes so many things including the economy, level lists and so much more)
Quckstart (skips the annoying tutorial quest and takes you right up to the exit of the sewers)
*Natural Environments (changes all sorts of things, the major change being that it changes the total number of weather types from 7 to over 40)
*Oblivion Graphics Extender
Portable Arena (an arena in your inventory that gives you plenty of options for fights, does not affect the actual arena questline)
24 Hour Arena (the arena holds matches all day and all night insted of 9 A.M. to 9 P.M.)
Cyrodiil Terrain Map (a more colorful and detailed map instead of that old boring brown one)
Realistic Force
AFC/Unnessecary Violence
No Psychich Guards (Eliminates the annoyances of guards finding you committing a crime in the middle of nowhere)

*These mods have higher preformance requirements*

I also suggest that if you have an older computer and not so good hardware, that you get Oldblivion. This mod makes oblivion look great even on older hardware, with low preformance costs.

Other great places to look for mods besides google include www.tesnexus.com and www.planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com

No problem m8. Also, If you ever want to make your own mods, get the official TES Construction Set, follow this great tutorial ( http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Oblivion_Mods_FAQ) and do whatever you want to ehance your oblivion experience!

Oh hey if you are just starting out and dont want to get too complicated, an alternative to Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul I would recommend is http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123328-tie-tamriel-immersion-experience/

I have "AllNatural 1.0" and the "Unique Landscapes Compilation 1.5.7". Binoculars is good. nGCD is GREAT as a level controlling thing - it automatically tweaks your attributes & skills, no prompts when you level.

I think I installed Qarl's texture pack. I also have the "Harvest Flora". I looked at Better Cities, but it hurt my framerate too much (I only have a 512MB 4870 - maybe it wouldn't hurt as bad if I'd had 1GB).

I used this link to figure out what the "essential" mods are:

http://i.imgur.com/Evdqp.jpg

BOSS and OBMM are essential. I didn't want OOO or any of the mods that make the game harder - that doesn't float my boat. Beware, too many mods and you are likely to have issues. I'd stick more or less with the ones the flowchart mentions and MAYBE a few others that seem small and don't cause conflicts. Nothing more frustrating than to invest a few hours in the game and then start seeing wierd glitches or missing tiles.

get the above mentioned utilities and i would actually start with something small like TIE. its a very small download and only one file to move but the changes in game it makes are drastic. be warned though the game will hurt more if you dont play smart. i would also look at mods that increase visuals immediately since vanilla oblivion is fugly to look at now. you can search on youtube for oblivion mods graphics and a bunch should pop up.

i wouldnt start with FCOM off the bat cause it overdoes alot of things. you cant take 5 steps without running into some glittering purple [censored]. it overpopuplates the world and makes it seem too confined but thats just a matter of personal preferance. WAC is still a beta but does things better than FCOM and the swords that are added are the best you will find in any mod.

I also suggest that if you have an older computer and not so good hardware, that you get Oldblivion. This mod makes oblivion look great even on older hardware, with low preformance costs.

These three lines are a bunch of rubbish. Oldblivion does not look great by anyone's standards, unless you're of the opinion 10 year old graphics are pretty darn good, it just lets you run the game on old hardware. Natural Environments does not have a higher performance requirement, it adds a few scripts and a few simple models, not anything that could really impact performance (unless you use Oldblivion perhaps, in which case your machine isn't really in any state to use other mods anyway). It also has a fantastically buggy weather script, so if you do end up using Natural Weather, get the fixed version by Ryu Doppler.

Ok, sorry i won't say anything about environments anymore. But if natural environments svcks so much then do you recommend something better because none of the other weather mods i've tried do anything well either. Also I didn't mean to put an asterisk with natural environments but the notation was referring to the other mods with a *

I never said it svcks - I'm an avid user of Natural Habitats and used Natural Vegetation for ages. As for alternatives, if you cast your eyes down to my signature, you might find a whole list of them.

Wrinklyninja is of course far too modest... I doubt you will have anything bad to say about All Natural, best weather mod as far as I am concerned...... ;)

For what it's worth, I would suggest deciding what kinds of mods you'd prefer adding to the game. Check out the categories in the Search function at TES Nexus, the premiere Oblivion mod site. Do you want companions? More quests? Tweaks to game rules? Better graphics? Homes? More armor and weapons? Decide what you're looking for, then ask specifically for favorites within that category, here. Because as it is, most people who are likely to see this thread use anywhere from 50 to 250 mods (or more), and each of us will have their favorites, with perfectly good reasons, too.

The best advice I can give for a new user is to start slow. There are thousands of mods available that affect almost every aspect of the game, but throwing them all in at once can make a right mess, because if you find a glitch or your game won't run, there will be much hair-tearing in finding out which one in a massive list might be causing it. Pick one aspect of the game you would like to change, install the mod, and run the game to see the effects--to make sure it is working and if you even like it. In addition, many mods can be tweaked via an .ini file. (For instance, I started with a weather mod--that's all. There are plenty of choices, but only one makes sense now because of all the other things it adds: All Natural is a compilation of all of the best weather systems--Natural Weather, AWS, Enhanced Weather--and you can use any or all of them as you wish.)

Once you have a mod working and are happy with it, move on to another aspect of the game that you would like to change--be it visual effects (as in world texture packs) or gameplay. There are often many choices in any given area, and (in general) if they modify the same thing, you cannot successfully run them at the same time ... so doing your homework first will save you much grief. Save the more complex overhauls (such as FCOM) for when you are more experienced with installing/playing mods. And always remember that there are as many mod recommendations as there are players--it is your game, and you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't check out all the options in a given area. In many cases there is no right or wrong choice--i.e., if you decide you like the look of one body mod over another, there's no reason not to use it.

Return to IV - Oblivion
