Visible item deterioration?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:28 pm

Just wondering what you would think of visible item deterioration. Maybe like every 20% or so your item shows more and more signs of physical deterioration (blades getting dull, chips in weapons from combat, dents / cuts in armor, torn robes / clothing etc.) Also, blood that doesn't magically disappear after 10 seconds?

I would love this. Also, someone did armor that fell apart in a mod for oblivion, naturally it was an advlt mod.

There's a search bar for a reason

Also, I say no to this idea. We don't need that much realism. I'd hate getting this awesome looking sword that I'd have to repair hundreds of times to keep it looking spiffy :banghead:

Again, more realism =/= better game.

I was just thinking about this earlier. It would make sense for it to deteriorate. A good example is glass armor and some of the glass maybe cracking or falling off.. I don't know, but it would add more sense of realism.

Keep in mind that if you have for example 5 states of deterioration, that means each item must have 5 different models. And it also means the game chugs more as it tries to retrieve models from the hard drive every time you kill something.

So, probably not a good idea unless someone is able to do something very clever in the back end.

isn't that a matter of opinion? I mean, it kind of broke immersion for me in oblivion when I would have this perfect, brand new looking weapon that just magically unequips its self, because apparently its broken but looks just fine.

I would definitely love this. It would also help me out a lot... I forget to pay attention to what conditions my items are and then have them break at some of the most inconvenient times. It would be cool to be able to say "Wow, my sword looks like crap. I should probably get it repaired soon"

No, everything I say is fact and everyone else is wrong ;)

Of course it's my opinion, these forums all full of them.

And, to be honest, I never though to my self, "Man, this weapon is always so shiny!! Why won't it look ugly due to damage!!??" Instead, I thought, "Man, this weapon is sixy."

Hmmm... this is actually good idea since it would be a great warning when your weapon and armor is not in good shape, but should be done carefully since I wouldn't like to repair my gear every second only to keep it nice and shiny.
Maybe to make first sings of deterioration show up when you weapon/armor peace is below 50% durability or something like that?

Also, for everyone saying that armor deterioration isn't important since TES is first person RPG, I think that if we are able to see our bodies when we look down (a feature they should put in Skyrim for many reasons), we will be able to notice sings of deterioration.
Still, jumping from first person to third one and being able to see your gear in one glance is much better than going into your inventory and then checking every item you have and checking their stats.

There's already a thread for this.

But, I'd probably rather not have it. Like stated above, 1 model should be enough for 1 weapon...

Here's my Topic on it. They've confirmed decals on armor, so we might see swords get dull or this could just be for blood splatter.

I think it's a great idea its another way to tell you too stop, slow down and repair your items.

The model doesn't have to be replaced, it could just be a simple re-texture.

100% yes. I've already stated this as a request in "Little things you want implemented in Skyrim"-style threads several times.

You get a quasi-unconditional YES! from me.
The only thing one needs to be careful with is to strike a ballance on how quickly items deteriorate.
but all in all

Yeah baby, bring it on!

This seems like an awful lot of trouble, and I don't care about "immersion." So no need on my account. Just another one of those trivial things that people think are a huge deal haha.

It'd probably take a prohibitive amount of game data to have all those additional textures for every weapon / armor / clothing model in the game. Something else would have to be sacrificed to make the space. Less variety in items would be the most obvious choice.

(Kind of like adding voice acting svcked up a bunch of space for the voice files, so you ended up with less overall dialogue and other things.)

It doesn't need to a trivial thing. Currently equipment health is just a hidden number. With visible equipment damage you could target an enemies weak shield and smash it to bits or use that deteriote armor spell for once.

And who doesn't want to use Goldbrand to slice an opponents sword in half?

I'll agree here. Not this much realism needed...vanilla.

This is what mods are for.
