Starting Anew

I played Morrowind and the two expansions extensively when they were around on the XBOX. I got tired, Oblivion came out and I had something new to do with my time. However, my 360 recently died and my computer... it is not so advanced. So what it boils down to is I picked up the GOTY edition for the PC. Finally got my 360 remote configured and I'm ready to delve back into this gem like I used to. It's been a while since I last played Morrowind (beat the Main and many factions as well as Tribunal) and I remember bits and pieces so I'm looking for some advice (not to mention the PC has all these Mods... and I've never been a big PC gamer so this is new). What mods/updates should I get to fix most of the problems? I have the newest version since it's GOTY... I believe. My character is looking like this at the moment...

Name: Vincent
Race: Imperial
Class: Ranger
Attributes: Endurance / Luck
Sign: Steed
Major Skills: Alchemy / Athletics / Alteration / Marksman / Light Armor
Minor Skills: Sneak / Speechcraft / Long Blade / Spear / Medium Armor

May seem a bit wasteful but I'm going for more of an RP exp and plan on getting my armorer/block/enchant/acrobatics up without classifying as Maj/Min. Main problems is picking Light / Heavy armor. I don't want a slow character... needs to be quick. I've started over probably ten times without leaving Seyda Neen because I want to be completely satisfied. Does Heavy armor make your character slower or was that because of the amount of weight my character was carrying? (Example: would heavy armor with feather effects have the same effect on movement as light armor - saying they weighed the same in the end.) As well as Block / Sneak. Regardless I'm going to level them both up but do I get added bonuses for sneaking up and attacking?

Also, didn't really want to be an Imperial they're just kind of the Jack of all Trades. Started out as a Nord but they're so tall. Really wanted to play as a Breton. Would that be a terrible idea going as a combat character?

Also... say I used a Breton and focused on combat. They get very few bonuses to major and minor skills so most would be around the minimum. Does that mean I would gain more levels than a Nord, who is more combat orientated and therefore would max out quicker? Would it even be worth it?

I'm currently using Morrowind Enhanced and Blocking Enhanced. Any more recommendations? I believe I've perused through most of the mods but as I said I'm new to Modding and I don't want to mess something up and there are just so many to choose from... I'm a bit wary.

Thanks all. Currently watching Charlie Brown... Happy Holidays everyone.

Happy Holidays to you too.

First off, I'm new to Morrowind for the computer as well, so I went into the Mods section of the Morrowind forums and asked the community to recommend mods to me.

Here is the link: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1144087-your-favorite-mods/

As for your other questions, if I tried to answer them, you would just have a bunch of bad advice.

Enjoy!

Tons of advice and links for players using Morrowind on the PC.

Also... say I used a Breton and focused on combat. They get very few bonuses to major and minor skills so most would be around the minimum. Does that mean I would gain more levels than a Nord, who is more combat orientated and therefore would max out quicker? Would it even be worth it?

The difference would be very negligible in the long run.

If you want to truly roleplay a Ranger, you could use http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8707. You can have a bedroll to sleep in the wilderness, hunt beasts and cook their meat, have a skin of water, etc. Just essential to RP. Besides, it's never tedious thanks to it's (optional) Automatic Mode, which feeds and makes your char drink for you, as long as you've food and drinks in your inventory.

Also, the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19510 and the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:Morrowind_Patch_Project (install both) solves many annoying issues, like the infamous Unarmored bug.

Thank you all.

Hah. Decided on using a Breton and ran across the trader who gives you the blinding boots of speed. Well I equip them and the screen darkens but I don't go blind. Glad I chose Breton. Also, is there much of a difference on the speed of my character concerning armor? I'm currently using Light/Medium but thinking of changing to Medium/Heavy. Seeing as how I have the BBoS what sort of an affect would 150+ lbs of armor compared to 50 or below be?

Well, the extra 100 encumbrance means 100 less space for loot and a Breton isn't going to have a lot of encumbrance anyway. The other effect is in fatigue while running but with BoBS, you may find the walking speed fast enough (I do) so then it will make no difference.

It isn't the armor, but the overall weight you're carrying that affects speed. The only "issue" with the different armor types is that Light Armor won't raise your Endurance, while Medium and Heavy (along with Spears) will.

You're playing a Breton, so it shouldn't be an issue, but a Nord, Imperial, Altmer, or Orc will have a few aiming eccentricities as opposed to a "shorter" race. The arrow trajectory will "bend" in mid flight, depending on whether the target is higher or lower than your character. If the target is higher, the arrow will bend downward and hit low; if lower, the flight path will actually bend UPWARD and hit higher than where you aim.

As suggested, Necessiteis of Morrowind allows you to fend for yourself in the wild a lot better, and I also like Abot's Water Life, which adds fishing to your list of options (you can even cook the fish using NoM). Add a crafting mod to complete your "living off the land" Ranger experience (Morrowind Crafting = better done, and more "lore correct", but high starting difficulty, and also requires rounding up the proper "toolkits" before you can do anything. Complete Morrowind Full = much easier to start, and uses common implements for almost everything, but various "spoilers" and other issues). Either crafting mod is a massive improvement over not having any, and makes some of the "clutter" in the game have a purpose.

As suggested earlier, both the Morrowind Patch Project (MPP) and Morrowind Code Patch (MCP) fix a lot of issues with the game. The MPP (replacing the venerable old "Unofficial Patch") fixes a lot (thousands?) of quests, placement issues, and dialog errors, while the more recent and amazing MCP addresses a number of problems with the game which aren't fixable through the CS or by other "traditional" means.

You'll probably want your game to look at least half as good as some of the posted photos of "modded" MW. A good "base" replacer such as the traditional Visual Packs or a newer equivalent can then be supplemented or partially overwritten by lots of individual replacers for specific items. Better Bodies is a "de facto" standard, and there are higher resolution textures which can be used over that to make it look almost as good as what's available for OB, rather than suffer with the awkward "puppets on strings" look of MW's nasty, segmented default bodies. MGE with distant land enabled, if your machine can handle the additional overhead, and a good animated grass replacer rendered with MGE, can make the landscape rival that of Oblivion, only with more "character". I set max fog distance in MGE to about 5 or 6, which is just enough so you can't see the whole island spread out before you like some cheezy Model RR layout, and you can still see far away hills through the haze, but it isn't like the everpresent and annoying "pea soup" fog in the "vanilla" game.
