How to make your 360 gamepad work on PC Morrowind

Just another bump to hopefully prevent this from being culled (Yacoby's site is having a problem today, so the archives are unavailable).

Still another anti-cull bump.

Hello folks,

I followed all the instructions and I have one remaining problem:

The Right anolog Stick works brilliantly However:

1) I can't block. I am using Morrowind Enhanced and I set the block setting to M2, however when I press the left trigger with a weapon equipped, no blocking occurs. Is it only when in actual combat I can block? I never tested this.

2) Pressing the LT turns my character to the right

3) Pressing the RT uses weapon/casts spells as required, however, similar to what I stated above, it makes my character turn left as the weapon is being swung.

If I can resolve these problems I'll be home free. I would appreciate any help.

I got around by opening the default cfg file in notepad, copying over the morrowind contents, and simply saving and exiting.

Does Morrowind Enhanced add a block move to MW? There is none in the unmodded game.

Try this for the RT/LT problem. Open the morrowind cinfiguration file in your Morrowind directory. Then find the two following lines and swap the values.
Joystick Look Up/Down=6
Joystick Look Left/Right=3
That's all I can think of trying. If it doesn't work, you'll need somebody with joytokey experience to chime in.

Thanks for the speedy response Yasgur.

Judging from all that was written by the OP, I made the assumption that using Morrowind Enhanced actually enabled block to be mapped. Am I wrong in this assumption? What was the OP suggesting?

I don't actually want my triggers to make me move. I just want them for blocking and attacking. I assumed that setting the paramters listed to 0, as suggested by the OP, forced the triggers to do this. How will changing them back to 6,3 or 3,6 help this?

See, I learn something every day.

Blocking Enhanced is a mod, found http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1958. The base game uses a dice roll figured against the stats of your character and his opponent, something like D&D. These modders will never cease to amaze me. :)

If you try that mod instead of or in addition to ME, perhaps your controls will fall into place. The two lines I gave you sometimes cure problems when two controls are working in reverse.

When I try to change the .ini file, it says "Cannot create the C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Morrowind.ini file.

Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

I'm lost on what to do.

Vista and Windows 7 are both very protective of their program files folders. The pinned Vista thread has instructions for moving the game to another folder, where Vista/7 won't fight you so much.

I got past it by saving the revised .ini file to my Documents folder and then swapped the two. I made a backup beforehand though. I'm still having trouble getting my right stick to work.

I'm trying to get this to work and still having some serious issues with the right anolog and the trigger buttons. I'm on Windows 7, tried restarting already and contemplating going back through all the steps (uninstalling drivers, reinstalling drivers, restarting, doing the JTK stuff and then the MW controls), but I wondered if anyone else had any ideas for how to do this?

Right anolog works fine until I open Morrowind, at which point it stops responding completely. Same goes for the triggers.

Trying a custom install of the 360 controller drivers to see if that works. :)

Edit: I'm wondering if the problem with the left and right triggers is to do with the fact that they are classified as axis, so the right anolog might not be working because of the way they are registered. I may try tweaking things to see what results I get. Not quite sure how this will end out, but hey.

No such luck with JoyToKey, but http://www.xpadder.com (admittedly I torrented it to see if it would work) is working beautifully. Simple to use, makes the game treat the controller as a a keyboard/mouse instead of having to faff around with joypad settings and you can select what keys you want each button to map to. Admittedly, I am having difficulty trying to think of keys to add that I might want (as opposed to just hitting them on the keyboard). I'm not sure if I should post a torrent link for it, however, as it is a ?6 program. If you're that way inclined, google is your friend.

I'm having similar issues with my 64 bit vista. I want to play it with a wired 360 controller, I've been trying everything for 2 days now and still the right joystick doesn't work and neither do the triggers. i followed the instructions here and the only response I'm getting out of my right joystick is that it moves the cursor to the left when i push left, and that's out of game only. I moved the whole Bethesda folder to my documents because it wouldn't let me (the admin) alter the files, saying i needed permission from an admin. I'm not uber good with this sort of stuff, but after doing everything correctly, double checking and reinstalling everything, even switching out programs. nothing works. seems like my only option would be to emulate morrowind...

Cool, it work nearly perfectly. Only thing is, I'm having the problem where the left and right triggers also turn my character.

Anybody know anything about this?

For those having trouble, try copying the code from this source: http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/morrowind_technical_problems/b49680/7291464/r9297081/. It fixed my issues, it is in the formatting of the text on the web site. Then save them as the .cfg files.

This doesn't work for me at all.

Whenever I press the left trigger my guy spins to the left and whenever I press the right trigger he spins to the right.

I was having the same problem where the triggers turned my character. I uninstalled then reinstalled all of the Morrowind files. Then I copied the Bethesda folder and put it on my desktop. I put all the mods and new files in the desktop folder and started using that. I don't use the Morrowind files that are under Program Files.
