Location Discovered/Explored

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:07 am

In oblivion there were so many places out in the wild that I would discover but would be pre-occupied by a quest that I did not have time to explore and would probably forget to go back to afterwards. I would like it if when you discovered a place on the map it would have a line through it. ( like the undiscovered diagonal line ) The line would show that you have discovered this place but have not yet entered it and would be removed once you entered the cave/town/ruins.

On my current oblivion playthrough I am trying to finish every quest and explore everywhere so I have to carefully avoid discovering locations by accident because I know I am likely to forget about it or get sidetracked from what I was already doing. This small feature of knowing if you had explored a place or just wandered past it would allow you to get the most out of the world and fully explore all of the unique places out there. I dont want to HAVE to enter every place I discover immediatly out of fear of not going back to it and missing some important loot.

Would anybody else find this useful at all?

Yes, yes, and yes. This was an issue I had as well.

From simplified basic map markers as in explored, not explored, or possibly a more complex marker showing info when you pass the cursor over the area, including the actual % of the dungeon explored. (Similar to the world map uncovered %).

I like this idea. I'm interested to see what they've done with the location discovered system.

This is a good idea to keep one immersed in the game. I found I had similar issue with OB, but I used the ol' pencil and paper to just jot down a new discovery and put "do later" or "done" next to it so I wouldn't have to use the memory bank in my head which was failing due to information overload

I didn't like the whole discover then fast travel thing.
I actually got a mod for oblivion which disabled fast travel completely, because I didn't want to use it but I kept on getting tempted.

Yep

And/or an annotatable map where I could jot down "not explored" or "Cleared but boss chest too tough to open"

Yes please. It would be most helpful to be able to tell if- or even how much- you had explored a 'dungeon'. And it makes sense contextually that someone would not only mark their map with places they had found, but also note whether they had explored them or not.

Yes, oh yes please. Shouldn't be too hard to mod in, though.

I don't know about a line through it though. How about having the icon be tan on beige when you've discovered it, and in color when you've fully explored it? And maybe return the filters to the map like Daggerfall had.

Icon color. Wouldn't be hard to implement at all.

In OB/FO, icons went from "negative" (light bg, dark fg) to "positive" (dark bk, light fg) when you reached the location. So, just have an extra icon, maybe with a green background, when you ahve explored all the levels .You need only a collision plane inside the dungeon: once the player crosses that plane, the icon changes to green.

.. good idea for a mod... I may give this a shot.. it's going to be tedious to put planes on all dungeons, though

Personally, I would rather be able to add my own notations to my map.

i wouldn't mind a notebook thing that you write in, that keeps you in line on exploration and division of tasks....

Very good idea. Easy to implement, and excellent for the player.

It would be nice to have a tagging feature that allows you to tag different areas of the map and insert personal messages and such much like picture tagging on Flickr. Also a journal like in Morrowind would be nice that you can add notes in as well.

If this game is truly for PC, not just consoles, then it must have the feature to put pins on the map so you could associate a note to it. This will allow you to come back any time to the map and hover on the various pins you created and see what was worth of notice in that place. The same thing should be done in your journal, why we can't add notes on people you have meet or quests you accepted? Make a true player journal. Anyway thanks for developing again this series.

that would be cool to put notes/descriptios of the place like "soiled self, dont go back in" B)
