In RL .223 is the predecessor of the 5.56 round; to non military specifications.

Can you use it in a varmint rifle or a service rifle??

.223 can be fired out of your 5.56mm weapons (like That Gun, Varmint Rifle and Service Rifle), because in real life, .223 is able to fire out of weapons chambered for 5.56mm.

.38 special can be fired out of .357 caliber weapons (Like Cowboy Repeater and .357 magnum) because in real life .38 special is similar enough to .357 (basically it's a .357 with a shorter casing) so that the weaker round can be fired out of a gun chambered for the more powerful magnum round.

There's also supposedly a .44 special in the game that can be fired from .44 magnum weapons, but I haven't seen any yet and I'm level 24. Maybe some shops sell it.

They're basically weaker versions of the base ammos that cost less, can be bought in bulk, and do less degradation to your guns.

You have to make Handload ammo; .308 Handload for example have effect of DMGx1.5.

Yeah, to use the perk you must be willing to learn the reloading bench. The .308 JHP ammo alone is enough to sell the perk as it makes a sniper rifle hit hard enough to take out anything in the game with 1-2 head shots. Almost makes the ARM redundant. Even in a more mundane hunting rifle the ammo does wonders. The perk is also required (Dev boo-boo) to press .44 Magnum SWC (a hybrid AP/HP ammo) rounds and those things are evil when loaded into a Trail Carbine.

Almost makes the ARM redundant, and then you start making .50 MG Match ammo :celebration:

I know the 223 is the 556 but in the game the are listed different and i even tried to use that gun since the 223 is a civilian size and the hand gun is ciivlian and would think it isnt military issue or there would be a ton. No weapon i got in my inventory ( and i got EVERY GUN) not energy weapn but the weapons that can use bullet ammo i got and NONE take it. I looked online in over ten sites and not 1 talks about it in FONV so im like WTF, i can take a screen shot if i gotta but i play on 360 so itll just be a pic but either way im baffeled... I hope somebody can explain or has had the same problem

It goes in any gun that uses 5.56 ammo. Varmint rifle, service rifle, that gun, light machine gun, etc.

You know you can use different types of ammo in each gun right?
I don't know what the button is on 360 but I'm guessing its up to switch ammo.

Pull the gun out of the holster and push up on the directional pad and it should switch to the alternate ammunition. Any gun that uses .556 ammunition will use .223 ammunition. The .357 revolver will use .38 special ammunition. Sometimes the ammunition doesn't break down into actual ammo but stays in the boxes, not allowing you to use it. Try dropping the ammo boxes and then picking them back up, then using them.

No weight or val in hardcoe either... and both are an ammo with specials about it to lower DT and raise damage and such AND NOT JUST BASIC. Was this in Beta and supposed to be left out and my game found it somehow or something weird like that possibly??

ANY MODERATORS HAVE A TAKE ON THIS MAYBE??? HHHHMMMMMMMMMMMM........ Or anybody else of course

No, you can use both the .38 special ammo and the .223 ammo. I use both alot as do the people in this thread that have been trying to help you. All you have to do is find a gun that uses .556 ammo and draw it, then push up on the directional pad and he will switch to the .223 ammunition. In any gun that uses .357 ammunition you draw it and push up on the directional pad, he will switch to .38 special ammunition. I'm telling you thats how it works. Beside the condition of the weapon on the right will have the type of ammunition equipped. If it worked your character will reload and it will say .223 or .38 special beside the weapon's condition.

Maybe check your manual to see if it'll say what the "switch ammo" button is on your system?

On the PC, it's hardcoded as hotkey "2". When I have a 5.56 weapon equipped, and I have several types of 5.56 ammo (5.56, 5.56 HP, 5.56 AP, .223), each time I hit "2" while the gun is equipped, the ammo type will switch to the next one.

So, hopefully your game manual will say what the equivalent of "2" is on your controller.

Hope this helps.

Thats what I was trying to say, the gun doesn't actually say it takes the .223 round but it does. Maybe your hotkey button isn't working try this ok,

1. Equip any weapon that uses the .556 round.

2. Go into the pip boy and go to the ammo section and look through the list to see if .223 is highlighted.

3. See if you can equip the .223 ammunition in the ammo menu with the .556 rifle equipped.

Let me know what happens.

I guess He thinks it broken because he got lots of ammo types for each gun and since he don't know what the button is he not pressing it enough times to get the .223 ammo to use status?
For the .556 weapons theres 5 different ammo types standard, AP, Surplus, HP and the .223 so needs 5 presses to see it.

50cal Match isn't as awesome as .308JHP though. It only add 15% damage and reduce spread is quite useless with enough skill.
