Carrying your shield on your back

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:52 pm

Just thinking off topic...http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy297/b_harrison/misc/road_to_skyrim_cap02.png, shows an icy/snowy city near the ocean.
Now, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSRtYpNRoN0&feature=player_detailpage#t=80s we see the same city near the ocean, but this time it looks like summer.

So... would this perhaps mean we kind of get seasons in Skyrim thanks to this dynamic snow? I mean, a concept art image wouldn't show a place as snowy/icy unless there actually was the possibility of it being snowy/icy.

Hm... you know, I'd never made the link between those two scenes before. You might be on to something.

I threw together a quick http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy297/b_harrison/misc/skyrim_comp_001.jpg in Photoshop. They look like different locations there, but then one of them is concept art, and from a very different perspective. So I dunno.

LOL! When I saw this thread I instantly thought of Boromir.

I'd prefer shields to be hoisted on your back when not in combat but as someone mentioned before, it does serve a purpose being equiped constantly. You can still block with your weapon sheathed in Oblivion. A sacrifice I can work with however.

I'm annoyed by having shields being worn on people's backs. I don't see it being a very likely solution for the wandering adventurer. Why wouldn't they just leave it on their horse or wagon when they're not using it?

So, what, you think having your shield on your back is less convenient than having to bring your horse or wagon with you everywhere you go, just in case you find yourself in an unexpected situation where you need it?

Yeah, sorry. I'm not going to drag Seabiscuit or Hidalgo or the wagon into a dilapidated fort "just in case." They're staying outside. And that's assuming I even have a horse in the first place.

Since a magazine said if you had two shield you were a confused turtle, I think that ... if we have two shields, one will be on your back and the other on your front (as in... wielding/carrying it).

In other words, double protection! :turtle:

As a detail, this is pretty important to me too. Characters just look cool with shields on their backs, and it's an obvious and practical way to carry one when you're not expecting a fight in the next ten seconds.

There are several pieces of Skyrim concept art depicting characters with shields on their backs... I really hope that means we can expect to see it in the game.

This :)

If you're like me, ie neurotic and detail-driven, it annoyed us greatly to see our character constantly carrying his shield around on his arm. I enjoy walking and melee combat in 3rd person. The only time I use 1st person is when I'm playing a magic-based character or an archer-based character, so I'm sure for the people who are always in 1st person it really doesn't bother you since you can't see it.

It is completely impractical for someone to carrying their shield in their hand throughout the entire time they have one equipped. Anyone else find it as annoying as I do?

Page 52 of the Game Informer article has a screenshot depicting the character walking through town with his sword sheathed and shield in his left hand. Doesn't look like you're going to get your wish.

Why are you assuming that everyone in the world would have a horse and/or a wagon?

What if you don't have either of those?
I'd assume most any traveler who plans on getting loot would. One person can't carry a ton of stuff with them on foot, and you can load up those wagons pretty well. I'm thinking the Daggerfall style wagons that you leave at the door of the dungeon, and you can return to them to drop stuff off.

So, what, you think having your shield on your back is less convenient than having to bring your horse or wagon with you everywhere you go, just in case you find yourself in an unexpected situation where you need it?

You can't bring mounts or wagons into dungeons, only cities.

Well on the Gameinformer it said on the picture of I think the forest giant something like "The warrior is approached by blah blah blah and he unsheathes his sword and takes the shield off his back" so I am confident this is going to be in the game ^^ If not meh its still TES but if it is I would love gamesas's attention to detail

I like this Idea. I think it would work since long swords, in OB, were sheathed at the hip and even two handed swords could be strapped either over or under the shield. I certianly like to see the end of the magic shield.

It wont be the ragnarok if this isn't included but I do want it in the game. The way you held the shield in 3rd person, both arms in the exact same position just with a shield plonked on one arm. If it must be held in one arm when not in use could there not be some sort of more dynamic pose? Either that or shield slung on back please.

What I can't figure out is, exactly how would it be supported on your back? Is there a harness or something? A hook? Would you wear it like a backpack? Like, with adjustable straps and everything? How quickly do you think you'd be able to "unsling" your shield when [random_creature] jumps out and attacks you? Do you think you could unsling it and have it ready quickly? In comparison to how quickly you could have it ready if it were just on your arm?

Does anybody *really* think that unslinging a shield from your back could conceivably be accomplished with a (cough) "simple" arm movement?

What about swimming? Or jumping? Would it just kind of magically stick to your back or something?

While I have thought about this... you can say the same about two handed weapons in Oblivion. And maces and axes. And quivers.

Well its a game does it really matter what it sits on?, its just it would be more aesthetically pleasing if it were to sit on your back rather than pop out, and I find everything you just said there to be the exact opposite of what you have written in your signature, Shields on your back when you are not using them for sure.

Most shield hold by a strap near your elbow, and a handle that you would hold. they also have a longer strap usually that runs diagonally top front to bottow back that you use to fling it to your back.

Edit: you normally keep your arm between this strap and the shield for quick stow and deploy.

Something like http://www.compleatseanbean.com/boromir9.jpg It's not diagonal, but I suppose it would work.

Yeah, I suppose it would depend on the sield crafter. the direction might depend on how you want it to behave and you swing it to and from your shoulder.

edit: Given the shield is round and the handle is unseen... how do you know it's not diagonnal? ;)
