ATI: world blacks out on zoom (dialogue, VATS)

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:37 am

Hi, I haven't seen this bug described anywhere. But the world textures all go black whenever I initiate dialogue, or initiate VATS, in fullscreen. I still have the text overlays, and I can still see some postprocessing occur (blood spot 'halos'), but the whole world behind goes black, until I exit the zoom state.

Also, the world will go black when certain effects occur, e.g. a grenade explosion; or if a certain actor appears (for example, a Mr. Handy would cause a blackout when he entered the screen viewport, but the blackout went away once he was dead).

I'm using an ATI (Sapphire) 5850, Win 7 x64 with the latest D3D SDKs. I originally loaded from the retail DVD via Steam, but then deleted and downloaded from Steam. I've tried ATI driver revisions from 10.8 to the 10.10c hotfix. I've tried any combination of detail level, resolution, shader settings, and antialias / aniso settings. It occurs with saved games, or from a brand-new game (the dialogue with the doctor is completely black, until he sits down). I have also tried the alternate d3d9.dll, and have tried generating my own via D3D9GEN.

None of this occurs in windowed mode: it's a fullscreen bug only, so I can at least gimp along in a window.

I'm lost. Has anyone else seen this? It's not a complete black screen bug, I can still see dialogue, PIP boy text, etc. There's just nothing behind it.

Thanks

I'm *still* seeing this bug, after the latest patches. Only usable in windowed mode. Fullscreen on my 5850 blacks out (except for text) during zoom / dialogue / VATS / special effects sequences.

I had this bug briefly. It was hapening in dialogue, opening containers, anything where the game changed focus to a text based display. I saved, quit the game, reloaded the game and reloaded my save and I have not seen the problem since.

However I do not use an ATi, I have a GTX260.
