Freez & CTD solutions

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:51 pm

Since day one of the release of this buggy ( And still buggy - not to mention the even more buggy Cowboy Repeating rifle - Latest Patch) I have had to deal with random Freezes and CTD's. I however, did not want to post my finding until I could verify them. You may have heard some of this elsewhere, but I am here to confirm it.

1) Fallout New Vegas is still not fully Quad Processor supported (Just like Fallout 3). This issue was causing random CTD's on my system. Installed .ini work around. CTD's gone.

bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

2) Fallout New Vegas is even more sensitive to non-windows codecs than fallout 3 was. This issue was causing random freezes on my system. Removed all non-windows codecs from my system. Freezes gone.

System:

Intel Quad Core Q660 2.4Ghz
2GB RAM
500 GB Western Digital HD
Realtek on-board sound (2.54 drivers)
Nvidia 250 GTS 1GB (260.99 driver)
Windows XP SP3
Direct X 9.0c

Those settings are meaningless. The game will still CTD if you use them, you're just limiting the amount of cores available to 2. On FO3 what this does instead of freezing and forcing you to go to task manager to shut it down, it will CTD. In NV it will CTD instead of freeze no matter what. The other threadedAI is most likely a setting the game ignores, it doesn't change anything either. If you go to task manager, no mater what it is set at NV runs 40 threads at a time. These suggestions are placebo and have existed since Oblivion. Even I thought (and posted here) that they fix things but after a while you run into the same issues

Sorry not a placebo for me. No more crashes, no more freezes. Period. As I said, I did not want to place it until verified. Whether you wish to believe it or not - I have no more crashes or freezes regardless of how long I spend playing. However, this does not fix the multitude of remaining bugs.

Furthermore, in fallout 3 the .ini fix permanelty fixed my indoors crashes (Which was common place for alot of quad users) . This to was tested and verified by the fact that I never again had a crash in fallout 3.

I am sorry the above information was not helpful to you. Perhaps you need to look at something else for your system Freeze/CTD issues.
