Speech Tag Skill

I didn't realize this - thanks for sharing. :)
How does Charisma factor in to passing a Speech check with NPC's?

Charisma directly affects your starting skill in Speech. But I'm almost certain it doesn't affect the Speech check itself. From the Fallout 3 wiki (Value=http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1121426-speech-tag-skill/Charisma):

Value Skill Modifiers
1 Barter +2, Speech +2
2 Barter +4, Speech +4
3 Barter +6, Speech +6
4 Barter +8, Speech +8
5 Barter +10, Speech +10
6 Barter +12, Speech +12
7 Barter +14, Speech +14
8 Barter +16, Speech +16
9 Barter +18, Speech +18
10 Barter +20, Speech +20

Charisma *might* help to give you a higher starting disposition with people. It *might* even open up some dialogue options, like Intelligence can. But I'm guessing. I don't remember the early Fallouts or Planescape:Torment having Charisma option in dialogue, the Fallouts stuck to Speech.

Sigh - now I want to take Speech as a tag skill. Back to the drawing board . . .

If Charisma unlocks dialogue, the Speech skill becomes superficial. Discuss.

Speech was VERY useful in Fallout and Fallout 2. I distinctly remember that I was unable to beat the Master in Fallout, but was able to Speech him to death (which is actually as rewarding as the battle itself). In short, it was damn awesome and felt like it actually added to the game. In Fallout 3, it got you extra cash and it was easier to beat [final boss guy of Fallout 3] via VATS than the speech option (plus, the speech option wasn't very rewarding).

I guess some people are hoping it'll be better in Fallout: New Vegas (Obsidian is good at this sort of thing).

i agree. the master would have torn my puny ass to bits if i hadnt talked him out of it

At lest Charisma gives companion nerve this time (buffs companions).

I would really like to see the figures on what all the SPECIAL do in FNV.

Plan on having speech and high Charisma on most of my characters this time.

Not quite true. Charisma also gives a non-linear bonus to your speech success chance. Every point in Charisma corresponds to a different multiplier. At Charisma 1 the base multiplier is 100% while at Charisma 10 the multiplier becomes 206%.
