Crash Upon Starting (FalloutNV has stopped working)

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:19 pm

I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit
3.25 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT
I've already updated all of my drivers and downloaded the d3d9.dll.
Does anyone know how I can get this game to run?
My computer ran Fallout 3 so I really don't know why this one won't run.

What fixed mine was going into the c drive under "users" and locating the falloutnv folder and deleting the info in there except for the save game folder. Sorry, can't give exact location, not on computer right now.

Uninstall Asus Gamer OSD or Smart Dr if you have it. Or any 3rd party codecs apps.
Turn off in-game community overlay in Steam options for Fallout NV.
Try turning off Steam Cloud for FNV.

A few things to try for now.

Uninstall Asus Gamer OSD or Smart Dr if you have it. Or any 3rd party codecs apps.
Turn off in-game community overlay in Steam options for Fallout NV.
Try turning off Steam Cloud for FNV.

A few things to try for now.

Have you tried this?

Also - is it possible for you to post the error message you get?

Edit: It looks as though you have a fax modem installed. If you do not use this for getting on the Internet, could you try to take it out of the machine? Also try to disconnect your USB harddrive before starting the game (this is just to rule out that these 2 devices do not create the error)

In the Event Viewer, do you see an error that mentions "FalloutNVLauncher.exe" or "GameOverlayRenderer.dll"? If you do, Steam responded to my request for support, and I posted the contents of their email http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1137432-fix-from-steam-support-for-crash-on-launch.

I tried this fix, and it made it to the "Please Wait" clip, and then it blacked out again. Thanks anyways though

I've run steam in offline mode, turned off steam cloud, and unplugged my external hard drive. I'm not exactly sure what a fax modem is to be honest, and I don't know what applications wolfpup is telling me to uninstall. Here is the message that came up when I just tried running it:

FalloutNV has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
available.

Fixed my error this morning. All I did was set all of the executables in the game directory to run in Windows XP Compatibly mode.

Codecs packs install 3rd party http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec. (Some examples would be K-Lite, CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack), Windows 7 Codecs (by Shark007.))

The Gamebryo engine can be very temperamental with some codecs installed leading to such things as crashing/failure to start.

Then I don't think I have any codecs installed. I generally stay away from 3rd party material.

I tried running the exe's in compatibility for Windows XP SP 2, but it's not working.
Is it my computer itself or the game?

I've done the d3d9.dll download, and now the game is reading that I have a GeForce 8800 GS card installed, I'm only running a 9500 GT. Not sure if this is relevant but thought I'd let you guys know. Thanks

after the patch today my game would crash on start up...

ArchiveInvalidated was the problem.
To fix this crash you need to move it down the list in the fallout_default.ini file, like so.

SArchiveList=Fallout - Meshes.bsa, Fallout - Voices1.bsa, Fallout - Sound.bsa, Fallout - Misc.bsa, AII-FNV!.bsa, Fallout - Textures.bsa, Fallout - Textures2.bsa

just search for the SArcheList part, and replace the entire line with that bit above. Works fine now.

Thanks man. I was trying all sorts of trial and errors to fix my crash but it was the old archive invalidator causing it. I went ahead and put the bsa further down the list like u said, did it for all 3 ini files just in case. No more crashes. Game on!
