Quick question regarding Oblivion mods

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:44 pm

Hi guys!

I enjoyed playing Morrowind on the PC with mods, however I noticed that many mods require the GOTY edition with its two expansions. I am wondering if most mods for Oblivion require the GOTY edition (presumably for the SI content) or will I be fine with just the regular edition?

Are there any 'major' mods that require SI/KoTN?

Cheers!

PS: I looked on Planet Elder Scrolls at a few mods to see, and they didn't require anything other than a patched version. I just want some confirmation

must mods don't need the GOTY edition, specifically SI. you only need to get the latest patch, version 1.2-something. pretty sure none the major overhauls require SI. i know OOO, TIE, and MMM don't, but i not 100% sure about Frans (as i don't use it).

Cheers thanks!

I'd much rather go with the standard edition because it's cheaper. I already own SI + KoTN on the Xbox 360 so I see no need to buy it all again unless I need to.

Francesco's also playing totally well without SI. In fact during installation of the (smaller) Fran's .exe it will ask you if you want to install SI support or not. :)

If you're going to use mods, you'll find it worth it to get SI for PC. Mods can add hundreds of hours of gameplay to Oblivion - well worth the extra ten bucks, imnsho, to get to play some of the awesome ones that depend on SI.

Paying a small amount of money for SI in order to use the otherwise free Integration by bg2408 is a bargain of the highest order. Plus other mods that use SI, but seriously, that one mod's worth the cash for SI right there and then all by itself...

Cheers for that. That 'The Stranded Light' mod looks huge, content-wise.

I suppose it comes down to how cheap I can find Oblivion. If the GOTY edition is only a bit more expensive, then I might as well go for it

I just checked eBay and you can get a used copy of the GOTY edition for $14.00 (includes S & H). It's the "buy it now" price.

I'm in New Zealand, so I'd rather buy locally. I'll shop around (Y)

There are some mods that require Shivering Isles of course, or even a few that require Knights of the Nine, but they don't seem to be as numerous as the Morrowind mods that require the expansions, but they still exist, so if you don't have Shivering Isles, you will still miss out on some mods. Of course, it's your decision to make, but I'd say that if you can find it for what you feel is a reasonable price, you should get it, after all, while you might have been able to play Shivering Isles on the Xbox 360 version, you wouldn't have been able to use the mods that require it.

Here in Norway, they sell new copies of GOTY for around $16 - and for comparision, new PC games are normally sould for around $85. So I have bought myself a second copy of GOTY just to be safe :D

Good luck with the shopping CovertBike. If game prices are increasing the same way food prices are in NZ then I can see why you might be squeezing your pennies. When I left a new console title went for around $130NZ and that was 5 years ago.

I don't know of more than a handful of mods that require Knights of the Nine, and none of them are approaching "must-have" status. Are there any really great ones out there that I've missed?

I never buy my games new locally, to be honest. I always order from overseas (Playasia, Ozgameshop). I don't mind waiting a week for shipping when it's costing half the price of buying it locally. Unfortunately, neither of them have the PC GOTY version of Oblivion in stock.

I'm hoping there will be a few copies going up on TradeMe (NZ version of Ebay) in the weeks leading up to Christmas and after
