Simple question about perks.

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 12:31 am

I couldn't find this through searching, so sorry if it's been asked before. I was wondering if you get a perk initially at level 1? If there is going to be a perk cap, it just seems right to have 50 rather than 49. Maybe you start at level 0?

Anyway, where exactly is the confirmation that you absolutely cannot get perks after level 50? I've listened to all the podcasts and I don't remember that being explicitly stated, but everyone has been saying it as if it's confirmed.

They haven't said anything about choosing a perk at level 1 that I know of. As for the cap, the lvl 50 cap will be a soft cap, meaning you can still progress beyond that, just at a much slower rate. They haven't said that you can't pick up any perks after that, when you hit 51 or 52.

I don't remember them saying that you'll get to choose at perk at level 1, but it kinda makes sense to be able to, I guess. And I know for sure that they said there'd be no more perks after 50. Think it was in the Todd Howard podcast.

K, sorry, just read through the transcript, and while he did mention level 50 a few times, and how the game was balanced for it, he did not actually say you'll stop getting perks then. Sorry. :)

The only thing we know for certain is a player won't be able to accumulate all the perks in the game. This implies some kind of perk-cap.

I assume at 50th level is your last, but it's just that, an assumption. If you get one perk perk per level, it's a little less than a fifth of all the perks available. (280 or something)

I don't know, man. Go read the transcript of the Todd Howard GI interview. He mentions "level 50" a lot, but I don't see any line explicitly stating that you won't get perks after level 50. But on both this forum and other forums people have been saying that as if it is absolutely confirmed. I would post direct quotes from the interview transcript, but I don't know if that qualifies as posting magazine transcripts. Probably not, but I'm being cautious I guess. Basically what he says is "a character that has gotten to level 50 only has 50 perks out of the 280 perks in the game." He doesn't extend this to "you will not get any more perks after level 50."

Personally I think you should be able to get perks until the theoretical maximum level you can reach. It seems odd to just suddenly and arbitrarily stop it at 50, when there's no way a single character can approach 280 anyway.

I don't think that implies a hard perk cap at all. He does mention that there will be a theoretical cap to your level, once all skills are maxed, which will probably be somewhere in the 70s (this might imply that you can't raise it further by going to jail - maybe going to jail not only decreases your skills, but also whatever contribution to your level those skills got you). Even if you can get 70 perks you would need to play at least 4 characters to see all of them.

It's plain up said that it will be Impossible to accumulate them all on one character. You can either think too hard about what that means, or take it at face value. Both are pissing in the wind at this point.

Starting at 0 is geek. I should know, I'm a programmer :teehee: .

From what I have read and heard, there will be 250 perks and you will only be able to get 50, also you stop getting them (perks) at level 50 but you can still level up past 50... just takes longer...

BUT... That is just all that I have read and heard so really just until we play it then we'll have a better understanding of how the perk system goes... :D

There's no in-coded level cap at all. The only level cap there is, is when you max out all of your skills, that's around level 100.

But yes, it's impossible to get all of the perks...

We already know you get a max of 50 AND stop gaining them at level 50, which leads you to believe we get one through the tutorial (I'm guessing that instead of choosing a class we pick a perk, although that completely invalidates what Todd said about not wanting to shoehorn a player into a specific role, as the first perk paves the way for what character you build) It is in the link Luke Skyrimmer mentioned and it has also been asked via Twitter to Pete Hines.

That 50 was 70 before... it's an estimation how much level you can get by maxing out all of your skills.

The perk cap is 50th level no more perks after that.. now that means 49 perks unless we start with one or start with a race perk...
