Real life TES Comparisons

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:28 pm

Of course, I don't have the list.

Stepping outside of gameplay restrictions, lorefully how big is everything in Nirn? Cyrodiil, Skyrim, Atmora et al.

After some thought, I've always imagined Vvardenfell to be roughly the size of Hudson Bay in Canada (if a teeny bit off I admit). Morrowind at least the same size as Canada fully. I've always used this scale when thinking about Tamriel being the largest continent on the planet. Cyrodiil as being the size of China, quite flippantly really, becuase it's very large, or should be. High Rock and Skyrim and northeast Hammerfell respectively combine to equate the size of Russia.

Am I wrong?

I've seen Vality's wonderful rendition, but how big is that in comparison to real life?

Well, I know that there was that unofficial map that ArthmodeusD made... but aside from Morrowind he pretty much used the Arena map and with the scale it reckoned that it's about 250 miles from Dagoth Ur and Mournhold/Almalexia.

I don't really think there are any official maps with a decent scale.

Quite. Official Bethesda statements measure High Rock as slightly larger then Britain. You can sue that size to compare to the rest of the continent as well as Yokuda.

Since Tamriel and Yokuda are the only regions we have seen maps of, there is no way of telling how large Atmora, Akavir etc are.

I remember reading in the Morrowind manual that the island of Vvardenfell is 10 square miles. Whether that's in lore or taking the average footstep measurement and counting how many footsteps it took to go around the entire island, I don't know...

Actually, I think it was stated to be twice as large as Britain, and that was the area of land covered in the game Daggerfall, not just High Rock. Unless you're referring to another quote/source?

From the PGE have 250 miles from Mournhold to Red Mountain which matches with comparison to Great Brittain and somehttp://www.imperial-library.info/fsg/danibenearticle1.shtml.

edit:

Daggerfall being the size of Britain come from here.

edit:

Vality's rendion is too big. It's mentioned http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=818043&st=0&p=11906904&hl=globe%20%20tamriel&#entry11906904 although it is somewhat equal to http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/pyandonea.gif.

If you use the Long/Latt system on the Redgaurd map you get to something like http://www.maj.com/gallery/Vahiku/Various-Mods/adan_globe.jpg.

Well, according to http://www.gamesas.com/games/games_daggerfall.html, it's twice the size, but if there's supporting evidence for the Iliac Bay being the same size as GB, then my link is probably wrong (the fact that on the same site Battlespire is referred to as a "TES Adventure" game instead of a "Legends" one doesn't exactly make it look like a good ES info source, either).

But, really? Using that system makes Tamriel look so small and pathetic looking. :vaultboy:

Only the size of Europe and all of northern Africa. :P That might seem small to Americans, though.

That's, if that is Tamriel being placed on an Earth sized globe for the sake of easy understanding?

I think it was Allerleirauh who once suggested we consider Cyrodiil and other Tamriel locations to be larger than they're portrayed in "Oblivion", though I've forgotten the scale. The distances and city sizes should be several times larger than they are, at the least.

I'm from England! :P I still think it's small! Europe and N Africa are tiny compared to Asia though. I always thought Tamriel was a massive continent, not a demi-continent.

Yes I have also considered Tamriel as a huge continent.

Considering a Nirn hour is equal to one Earth minute, then Nirn must be tiny.

(for all those who can't tell, I'm joking :P )

Considering that every planet is of infinite mass and of infinite size, I always wonder why people are trying to measure Nirn.

Our own mind gives the dimension, and to travel around Nirn means to cross infinity.

We shouldn't ruin this wonderful thought by succumbing to our mortal feelings of selfishness, trying to measure everything by comparing it to our relative standards, shouldn't we? We are all one and the one is in all of us.

Even Lorkhan wouldn't dare comparing its own confined infinity with others ( hmm, ok, maybe he would :) )

By the way, "stepping outside of gameplay restrictions".., as the OP wanted us to do, I hope Lorkhan never learns how to do that...

Just the opposite, in fact. Larger planets have more mass, and thus more centrifugal force, and thus spin faster. So days are shorter on larger planets, not longer.
