Why does New Vegas lag for me

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:23 am

Okay first I’ll state my specs so there’s no mistake that ideally I can play fallout smoothly
Intel Core i7 720QM 2.73GHz (3.2 GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)
8GB DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 5870 (latest drivers installed)
Windows 7 Home Premium

Seriously when I play fallout on high I get about 50-60fps and at any time it drops to 15-20fps. And the odd thing is the same thing happens when I put the game on the lowest settings.
I know it’s not my computer because I can run Crysis on Ultra just fine. I understand fallout is open world so there more to process, but my lag is ridiculous. Anyone have any idea why?
Also is anyone else with good specs having the same problems?

It seems that Obsidian managed to screw up some aspect of the internal linkages among the game itself, the Direct3D API routines in Dx9, and video drivers, when the video graphics card is Dx10 capable, and the Windows version is Vista / Windows 7. A very high percentage of Geforce card owners have a wide range of problems, while a relatively small portion of those with Radeon HD 58xx cards have much milder symptoms, including what you just described.

There have been some workarounds discovered, and both nVIDIA and Bioware are developing permanent solutions. There is a special hot fix available for your Radeon you should look for, and some other things that a look through the archives here will give you (use the Search).
