please help me play NV

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:33 pm

i preordered the game. ive been trying to get this to work non stop since it has been available. fallout 3 runs perfect on high with texture packs/mods/whatever. before the last patch i tried the DLL , INI mods to no avail. i have the latest nvidia drivers. i tried rolling them back. uninstall, reinstall game, i just reformatted my entire computer, reinstalled windows 7 ultimate 64, losing all kinds of stuff installed but i thought it would be worth a try. NOTHING WORKS. i even downloaded a torrent of the game and tried that, same problem. it will play fine for about 30 seconds and then boom SLOW.. not even 5 fps, more like 1 or 2. if i keep running around it will go back to normal, and then slow again. for example when i start a new game it runs fine but halfway into editing my facial features it jams up. not even action parts, just menu stuff. i am at my wits end with this. i have spent hours and hours and hours trying everything to get this game to work. i cant believe i cant get a refund. what a disappointment. this is my last attempt to try and fix the game before i completely write off the company and only pirate games from now on instead of wasting my hard earned money. im poor, this is BS.. please help me figure this out, thanks!

As this is time related and a laptop, is there anything power management related that could be kicking in?
Can you try forcing an allways on/full power state, in OS/Nvidia settings?
Try running an app that will monitor GPU/CPU speeds whilst testing, to see if these are dropping, this will help to confirm if this is the issue.
Might also be worth testing in Windowed mode.

PS: It would be sensible to remove any mention of piracy!

Pretty sure I've seen this DXDiag before...!
Friend, your harddisk(s) are full-full-FULL.
You need more space - more space to play, and space for your swapfile.
You also don't have too much video horsepower there.
A 9800 512MB is a fine vidcard - but you must select minimum settings with no vsync, no AA and no AF.
Make sure that nVidia Control Panel is not forcing vsync, AA or AF, and all settings are 'high performance', before you start the game.
Also, with that tiny diskspace you had better make sure your drives are 100% defragged before attempting to play.
So tune up your rig - and try to get things running with conservative settings.
No vsync! Heheh...

50 gigs free on the installed drive not enough room?? you have to be kidding me. i just reformatted and reinstalled windows and obviously defragged everything. little registry cleaner ect.. i even tried it before installing antivirus. my computer is good enough to play this game. i can play fallout 3 on HIGH WITH TEXTURE PACKS AND MANY MODS just fine. this thing runs premiere pro without lagging so what is the hang up? i know how to keep a clean running computer, that is not the issue. i have never had a problem running anything else before. this is the games fault. all settings on low, programs have priority over graphic settings. im not talking general lag, im talking JUG JUG JUG stuck....... JUG JUG pause..... i can deal with a slow game but this is just ridiculous.

I got one statement:

Notebooks will never be officially supported when it comes to games. When you use a notebook to play games - you might as well be playing russian roulette. Add this to the fact that Fallout New Vegas already has issues (And even more so with windows 7 64 bit) and you are asking for a can of worms. If you have a notebook and want to play games - you are better of trying a demo first or sticking with GOG for games.

these generic wrong answers are just pissing me off more. my 'notebook' plays every other game just fine. these answers dont help me fix this broken game but thanks for taking the time for pasting your statement

Aww your other thread was deleted - I hoped it had just been locked. My best man said he wanted to tell it a version of it when he gave his toast and I didn't feel like retyping it- but maybe that is more self-preservation instinct than lazyness.

Come to think of it, Bethesda may have saved me from going on my honeymoon with a a salad fork lodged in my arm. At the same time though they have probably cost me what could have been a very unique conversation with the whoever would happen to be lucky enough to be working a particular airport security metal detector on at a particular time. Shame on you moderators- you deprived my best man and TSA employee 01189998819991197253 the joys of having a funny story to tell (a million caps to anyone who gets the reference without googling it- and I'll know; I'm magic). That is, unless I'm completely insane, absolutely the most horrible thing someone can do. Afterall, the only redeeming quality of suffering is that it makes other people laugh. If you take that away, you take the joy out of human tragedy.

On a serious (and on-topic) note-

Try running the following tools (just the free versions):

http://www.sisoftware.net/?d=&f=downandbuy&l=en&a=
http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/(also 3D mark if you want- their site may be able to help you figure out what your performance SHOULD be)
http://www.hdtune.com/download.html (Just the free version, though there's a free trial for the pro as well)

On one of my systems (old now, but was high-end enough at the time to expect good performance) those tools were able to help me diagnose that the hard-disk my games were installed on had been semi-permanently set to PIO mode by Windows. The disk was fine, but there had been enough read/write errors over the life of the drive (I think 5 is the magic number) for windows to decide to set it to the slowest possible mode and never have it revert. The fix for that was a registry hack that tricked Windows into thinking the drive had been plugged in for the first time - wiping the slate. A year and a half later it had not reverted so obviously Windows decision to sacrifice massive amounts of performance to protect my data was both paternalistic and incredibly soul-killingly stupid.

If any of them show an area (probably a very specific and seemingly obscure one since your problem sounds unique to trying to play this game as opposed to general) of significant deficiency compared to the rest of the tests then that will effectively zero us in on a likely cause. If you see that, then you'll know it's a driver, setting, or firmware issue and we can correct it accordingly.

If you do not see any sort of deficiency and experience the same performance issues on a wide range of game settings then you can be fairly sure it is a compatability issue specific to some part of your particular hardware, software, or combination of the two. If that's the case, then by establishing it as the most likely source of your problem you will greatly increase the chance of it being caught up in a patch or community fix.

A crazy idea, but it might be stupid enough to work:

This may sound silly, but since the total memory useable by the game plus your total page-file use is well bellow your installed RAM you may see dramatic improvements if you disable pagefile use.

I know, it sounds counter-intuitive, but I have seen remakable improvements in game performance on my laptop since doing this - particularly with Fallout New Vegas. The game is constantly pre-caching resources in memory but much of this may end up being cached in the pagefile and not strictly in RAM. Your laptop specs seem pretty good, as mine are, but laptop harddrives can be unepectedly and frustratingly slow for the kind of access in games like NV. I can also understand why it would be having a much harder time with NV than Fallout 3 as NV has more open areas (and therefore a greater and less predictable need to pre-cache a wider variety of resources). These open areas also have a lot more going on (regardless of how it may seem) in terms of background events and AI scripts. There are more roving NPCs, more particle effects, more physics effects (I wonder how far away a tubleweed must be before the game stops actively tracking it), and just more things going on independent of you. NPCs will often battle each other just over the hill from you - and there can be upwards of 3 groups fighting at once. For example, I noticed a very strange slowdown while walking a little south of Novac. After walking a bit I came across a combination of dead Legionaries, NCR Troopers, Mercenaries (traveling merchant's guards), and one blind death claw. I've come across similar scenes involving fiends, desert creatures, and NCR troopers.

So, try deleting that pagefile. I think there's a decent shot it will help if not completely alleviate your issue.

For Windows 7:

Type "pagefile" in the search box in your launcher/start menu.

Follow the instructions.

Set to 0.

It will, at this point, tell you this will basically turn your system into a fancy space heater until you turn it back on. That's not true. Since you "only" have 4 GB of RAM you may encounter instability when running multiple resource-demanding applications. For this reason I would not have anything open besides the game while you play it - I even set the compatability options (by right clicking and going to properties on falloutnv.exe) to disable desktop composition and visual themes when you run it. Additionally, professional content creation software that is often required to deal with single files that are far larger than system memory likely have optimizations for pagefile use that may render them annoyed at you if you do this. If you use your computer to game, watch movies, listen to music, browse the web, write papers, create spread sheets, etc. then you probably won't notice any instability- just improved performance.

Now you do have a very highly rated and well respected harddisk in that system. It SHOULD be performing on par with anything most people have in their gaming desktops that isn't a noise-making monster of 10k rpm drive or an SSD. It does, however, do unusually poorly on transfers of non-contiguous small (say 4-128 k) files or randomly distributed blocks constituting a heavily fragmented file. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but if Fallout NV's caching involves in part reading many small pieces of the main data files and if enough of them are this small and highly non-contiguous in their distribution this could result in you seeing very poor performance. A more likely cause would be something like an extremely fragmented harddrive - that is to say if I was not absolutely sure you have already tried that. I know you have- I'm sure it's one of the first 20 things you did try.

Let me know how it works.
