Need to sleep on level

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:52 am

Well I sleep all the time in TES games, so I should be fine...

@guildenstern

I wish I could've picked up those bed rolls that were laying all around in morrowind... So, yeah, having ways to actually sleep in the wilderness would be nice, just as long as it's not "Illegal" (Maybe even sleeping inside a town, if not enough money to pay for a bed, just roll out your bedroll, and sleep on the curb...)

Oh come on, sleeping isn't that big of a deal. What they should do is let you have bedrolls that you can take with you.

Since forever and a day, sleeping has been a mechanic used in most 'serious' RPG's to bring the player back to town. Then again, we're not in the grand age of the 'dungeon crawler' where all you did was play through dungeons.

There are a few reasons for this mechanic:

1. It allows the player to turn in and collect quests from the local bar or other NPC's.

2. It's also a good time to go sell all the loot you've found, and check the shops for new equipment and spells.

3. It was also used to 'refresh' the dungeon with enemies (if the game had dynamic and progressive AI implementation).

4. If you were low on potions, you could sleep to regain health and magicka/mana.

I've always been a fan of setting up a tent, or a bedroll and risking the sleep/level-up mechanism outside. It was a neat feature to be suddenly awakened by an enemy (my favorite, the cliff racer, as it was EASY to take down with a LIGHTNING SPELL or LIGHTNING ENCHANTED weapon in Morrowind)... Anyways, I guess it really depends on how you play the game. I play until my inventory is so full I'm bulging at the seams, regardless of a level-up or not, so I am forced to go back to town and sell my collection. I say they should keep it in, but also bring back the ability to sleep in the wilderness. But hey, we all play TES games differently, so what do I know?

Ummm....what? That makes no sense. What does the level cap have to do with sleeping or leveling up some other way?

Sigh. Read the message of the guy I quoted..

I didn't like Oblivion's levelling. It was better if you didn't levelled, which I find quite strange. And if you roleplay (I do), sometimes, when it was late and you wanted your character to go to bed, it wasn't a good thing for you, because you wouldn't ger any +5.

To solve it, I installed http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13879 mod. And I'm very happy with it.

I liked sleeping on level up. It actually gave you an excuse to go and find a bed rather than the usual 'wait until health returns'. I only ever used inns if I needed to level (aside from quests).

I think they're going to do it Fallout style. That way the whole leveling exploit isn't really a factor.

Maybe you don't, but I do. That's why people take naps. A lot of times I feel more refreshed after a one hour nap in the middle of the day than an 8 hour nap through the night.

but do you spend an entire week in a dungeon without sleeping before that nap?
Oh wait, you've played Elder Scrolls games. You can't deny that you haven't spent a solid week playing. So disregard that point.

I just don't like spending game time running to a bed to level up. I'd rather experience the game they spent five years on.
At first I didn't like the ideas of bedrolls. But I'm starting to like it. I feel like it'd work the same as MW, and also make sense.

Um... you wouldn't be able to have a level cap if you couldn't sleep. So be thankful for sleeping?

Anyway OP, I don't see what the big deal is. :/

What are you talking about?

in all srsness, this is a rpg, not some fallout game, it has to make sense how you level up, go to bed, MEDITATE ON IT!

keep the leveling as it is I don't want to have to level until I'm ready especially if perks have a preset skill level requirement and please keep the fallout leveling system in fallout.

Way to totally ignore the second half of my post which countered that argument before it was made:
-snip- regardless, at the end of the day, it's a roleplaying game. The tools to roleplay are there, and whether or not you use them to that end is up to the player. Roleplaying requires the players' cooperation.

Since I've been playing TES series there's something that has bugged me. The need to sleep to level up.

With Skyrim my hope is renewed that we'll just be able to level whenever we wish, wherever we are, at any time we'd like.

So what do you all think?

Will you again be waist deep in a dungeon and ready to level yet unable to do so because there are enemies nearby or you're not near a bed? As if after an hour nap my character is going to suddenly have new abilities and more health when they wake up... I thought you were supposed to learn by doing instead of sleeping in TES games?

IMO this tired old system needs to go. Just let me level up whenever I want.

I think this oversimplification is lame, and training should be obligatory to lvl up in some skills.
Its not because you made 3534564 minor potion that you automatically know how to do another kind of potion or the like, especially with the pleark system where suddenly you know out of your rear end something you never learned and never practiced.... lame.

Well I think it's lame to have to find a bed every time I level. Simply put from my point of view it's the game devs wasting my time.

I may indeed need a nap after a workout. However we're talking about a character in a video game. If my character runs from Anvil to Chorrol they don't need a nap, why would they need one when it's time to level? Making said character sleep to level is imposing a small bit of roleplay on the character. Roleplayers like it, I understand that. Roleplay to your heart's content, I don't care. I'm just saying in a game where you're supposed to "learn by doing" having to sleep when you're ready to level seems completely backwards.

I play TES for the exploration and combat, could care less about RP. I'm just asking for a system that doesn't get in my way and force me to do things I really don't want to do every couple hours. Would love to play without sleeping or waiting for once...

Travel to Inn, pay 10-50 gold, sleep, done.

I would like the Daggerfall system more or less.

Having to sleep when you go up a level provides good pacing. If you just level up in the dungeon mid-loot then it loses some of the gravitas. It's a state of mind thing. If you were seriously this annoyed by it then I have to wonder what kind of attention span you have, since fast travel made it so that you could go to a bed instantly if you were not in danger.
