Really, Bethesda, Really?

That's a fallacious argument. $10 might seem unimportant in buying a certain product but giving you $10 for nothing is obviously a waste
I know what a principle is. Complaining about something isn't a principled thing to do. Making serious efforts to stop something is what people do for their principles. Complaining like a child isn't going to get you anything but disrespect and scorn from your peers. If you think it shouldn't be $60 then don't buy it, that's called voting with your wallet and it's what advlts do

It wouldn't be a waste, I promise I will put it to good use.
I personally won't be paying $60 for it, and I'm not really complaining about it. The thing that bothers me is

get over it, id pay $150 for skyrim if i had to

I'll gladly pay premium price for this game, no questions asked.
Let us see:
unlimited replay.
My favorite setting (Elder Scrolls).
Thousands of hours of free added content ( mods )
CS for free, making my own mods.
Quality DLC/Expansions - Ala Shivering Isles.
6 years in the making and a passionate team behind it.

Isn’t this enough?

the market price is being raised by fools blindly throwing whatever money a company wants and then thanking them for the ass[censored] they just received. This is something that angers me, and it seems to be a common trait among the 20andunder crowd.

..Games in Australia are $100. Shut up.

If the prices of games were based on time and resources put in to the development, Skyrim would cost $150+ in the US. If it was based on lasting time of gameplay and quality, probably about $300.

Yea, that's obviously ridiculous. Then again I could see myself paying up to $80 for a TES game. I don't know why developers feel like they all have to put games out at the same price. There are plenty of games I might have bought day 1 if they were ~$30 and some I might pay over $60 for. This is what the whole issue is over mobile phone apps are, some handheld developers feel like mobile apps are driving down the prices of games but realistically as long as you put the game out at a reasonable price for the quality you should make more money.

In Australia PS3 blu-ray discs can cost upwards of 120 dollars if it is a game bigger game like a Call of Duty title. 360 owners don't pay much less. Us PC-master-race members can pay up to 100 dollars for a new game. Considering that our dollar is worth more than yours at the moment, I would stop complaining about your tiny price increase. No wonder America is so deeply in deficit, it's people like OP who can't fork out a little extra to pay for a game that refuse to pay taxes to "big government".

Yeah, COD costs like $110 bucks when it first comes out. So prepared to be devastated if you think 60 is being outrageous.
I'll pay 200 if it's TES, and I aint rich.

Allow me to disagree:
The customer is happy to pay for a quality product - hey, when you buy a Porche, do you pay peanuts?
The company gets their money and generates profit, their employes are also financially rewarded, knowing for a fact that their jobs are safe.

This is a perfect blend that you don't see that much nowadays, usually you pay silly money for rips or rushed products, did I mentioned Bioware?

Ultimately it's a free world and no one is asking you to buy it, it's your choice to evaluate your money, your purse and what you get in return.
It's also a thing called "Capitalism".

Uh I thought most new games coming out for Xbox and PS3 were around $59.99?

Edit: Just took a quick look at Best Buy's website: Most new games are around $59.99

OP if you have such a problem with the price wait for about a year/year and a half and buy it used. That should cut down on the price considerably. I see no real problem

So you don't think the 'powers that be' would pull the plug on BGS if they failed to maximize profits by selling their games at the price customers are willing to pay? I think they do need to sell it at these "high" prices to stay in business.

Beth made Morrowind, which sold what? Three or four million copies? Oblivion had an average of three million copies sold. They could afford to outbid other companies and secured ownership of an established RPG franchise, released two titles under that name (Fallout 3 and New Vegas) which each sold about thee mil, give or take.* These were all sold without a sixty dollar price tag. If the higher ups are so focused on a ten dollar price hike that they'd shut down the entire studio (thus receiving no price hike at all), they've got some seriously messed up priorities.

*numbers were averages for the most part. Some sites report another million or so, but I'm not sure where the figures come from.
I don't disagree with your point...they price it at $60 because customers are willing to pay $60. I'm simply saying that I have no problem paying $60 because of all the reasons stated previously. They would be incredibly stupid to sell the game at $50 when people are clearly willing to pay $60. Thus, my answer to the original post is that it should be priced at $60.

Right, which is why I wish people weren't so eager to give up their money. People must realize that endorsing one company's ten dollar price hike gives every company the a-okay to knock up their prices. Other companies will say, "They paid fifty for Oblivion and fifty for Our Game, so if they paid sixty of Skyrim they'll pay sixty for Our Game 2."

It'll be 60$ - most AAA pc games are nowadays, it makes no sense since the initial console-game price-hike was supposedly in place to offset console manufacturer licensing, which doesn't exist on the pc, but there's not much we can do. Unless there's something we don't know, and Microsoft figured out a way to charge a license fee for publishing on Windows?

I like how the guy who started this thread is angry about information that hasn't been announced yet. It would be a very big surprise to anyone if the basic version of Skyrim (no collector's edition or anything) cost anything other than $60 for consoles and $50 for PC, like every other damn game on the market.

Mainstream PC games are 50$ when they come out... end of discussion.

PC games get to be 60$ when console games are 70$.

There is no excuse for pricing the game at 60$ for the PC... you are not paying any licensing fees for the PC! HELLO! And I know you are in no need of increasing revenue.

Todd, I hate you. :swear: And if you so much as [censored] think about selling cut out portions of the game back to us as DLC... :gun:

Valve is pricing Portal 2 at 45$ pre-order special. Valve gives us DLC for FREE! Why don't you be more like them!

it doesnt matter what the price is! the only thing that matters is that skyrim will be for sale 11. 11. 2011, so tes fans will give the enemies in skyrim a ass whipping of a life time! tes fans say...just bring it skyrim

There are plenty of games goin for 60 on pc, at least form the big time games

Dragon age 2

Crysis 2

are the examples I found with 10 seconds of research.

Everything else is going for 50 as new releases (exempting below radar games).

Your really not going to compare the value of Valve's non-RPG games to Bethesda are you? Not to mention Bethesda's also releasing a construction kit so there's no gap in tools either companies offer.

PC Skyrim's higher price is presumbly due to inflation and the fact that Bethesda Softworks/Zenimax's main revenue comes from consoles.

But honestly. Go pay for the dozens of generic games around(Most of them GTA rips or fps) and see if their worth your money instead.

And a few months later compare what you got from those games against what modders will make with the Creation Kit.

But really we don't exactly know why it's priced where it's at.

And yes their trying to get a profit for both making money and paying employees so they can pay their bills, expenses, buy material things, and keep financial obligations to family members and kids.

Whole point of a business.

This is why Activision(Not much different from EA. Both represent what any company will eventually become) focuses on making the most profits.

Biggest reason being shareholders.

The people making these game dvelopments a reality. This is a market, part of the Entertainment Industry.

End of the day it doesn't appear like Bethesda is trying to screw the consumer. Try giving a look at Valve's other game launch prices or the prices of EA's releases like Dragon Age 2.

*sigh* This thread is getting out of control and I sense a T-word here.

It's TEN DOLLARS. I know you want to justify your principle and that you must be right an everyone else is wrong, but look at all the other posts; TES fans will gladly pay an extra 10 bucks because we love the game and respect Bethesda. If you don't, fine, your opinion, but that doesn't mean you have to shove your "principles" down other people's throats and to hell with what ever everyone else thinks. And bashing on Australia? Uncalled for.

Below-the-radar? You mean indie direct download type things? Those are hardly below the radar. Self-labeled "casual" games can make ridiculous amounts of money, you know.

Yes, eventually inflation will make PC games become more expensive, and Crysis 2 and DA2 might be the harbingers of a new trend. Let's just hope that's the only trend they usher in, because [censored] both of those are terrible sequels.

Oh no, one of the most anticipated games that only comes out every 4+ years and lasts twice as long in replayability is an extra 10 dollars!

Pfft, I don't care if the collector's is 100 bucks, I'm paying it.

Now, I can understand if you felt cheaped out with another company that cuts out the modding community, hacks apart their game, and releases it on a yearly basis. However, this is a company that has listened to us since the start, still produces PC quality games with all the features we've grown to love, and learn from their mistakes. Personally by not having to buy Dragon Age 2, the extra 10 dollars towards Skyrim isn't even going to be noticeable.

Sadly, I think this 10 dollar price hike is going to steer me away from the collectors edition, and I also won't be pre-ordering it/buying it the day it comes out. I'll just wait the 17 days from it's release date to my birthday and see what the community thinks of it before I bother throwing down 60 bucks on it.

Seems to be usually retailing here for £25 (approx. $40); I'm not so sure I would've been in a hurry to buy it had its retail price been half as much again. I must admit I'm surprised at some of the comments in defence of price rises, most consumers are usually a bit nonplussed at the idea of a potential 20% hike.

1. Is it actually confirmed that its $60? Source please.

2. Is it that much of a difference? i mean, i don't like paying more for anything if i don't have to but... $10 more...for a game that cost $50+ million (estimated, oblivion was right on $50M so probably more) to develop?

3.Valve gives free DLC, sure, but they gouge money with steam, and PC get mod FREE,which add alot more content, alot more than DLC added for OB, and not all of them are good, and most of them pormographic :D but, its free. And that alot better than a few free pieces of DLC valves given.

4. I feel better paying more for a Bethesda game than i do an EA game or a Activision game (CoD) Than i do a Bethesda game because there a better developer than practically any one else out there, and id rather my $10 extra dollars go to them, and not someone else.

5. I'm getting the CE anyways, so ill be paying more regardless, and i don't mind, because getting the CE will make me feel like i am better than my friends who didn't. (plus the CE will probably be epic so ya)

Well, this isn't very productive as a discussion topic. I haven't seen any definite price for the game yet. If you go to Amazon, you'll see the "price guarantee" there. Just like stores have a habit of pulling a date out of thin air before a publisher announces it officially, they use a place holder for price. The real final price may or may not be $10 more than it used to be. Ask Microsoft and Sony why dlc isn't always free. And now this can close.
