Amon Amarth

I'll probably use the LOTR soundtrack when I'm bored of the in-game music after a few hundred hours of play.

"HAI GUYZ! CHECK OUT MY NEW DOUBLE KICK!"

"Sweeeet! You should use it throughout every single song!"

"Yeah! And you know what would go good over the top? Tremolo picking every note!"

"Hell yeah! I'll join in right after I squeeze this log out of my ass. URRRRGHHHHH! AHHHHH URRRRR HNNNNNNNN AHHHHHHH!!!!"

"DUDE! That's our vocal line. That, right there!"

"AWESOME!"

Your opinion. I can say the same for rap, hip hop, techno etc etc etc. Eventualy it all sounds the same. But do more than just listen to the way it sounds and more to the words most metal I listen to tell a story Unlike most music that sings of cars drugs money or being stuck in a closet because youre [censored].

True. I just prefer listening to a story when it's not being told by the Cookie Monster's spastic brother.

Also, rap, American hip hop, and most techno absolutely svck. Most mainstream music does these days (messages about cars, drugs and money). But the all time best band that tells a story is Maiden, because the singer actually sings and gives more than one emotion.

Same with some of the music I listed. Within Temptation, Therion, Iced Earth, Dream Evil, Funker Vogt, Leather Wolf etc.

Best music for lyrics is without a doubt Bob Dylan, greatest lyricist of all time, and if you can love the sound of someone vomitting while screaming, I'm sure you can't hate his unusual voice too much either. Most of the songs would probably be too acoustic for your tastes though.

I mean maybe metal does tell a story, but there's no way I can understand what it is, so it doesn't seem terribly relavent.

Keltic Viking

I listened to a little Bol sagoth in the past, it's been awhile though, and thanks for introducing me to electric wizard, really diggin it, gonna have to go pick up their albums now :P

No problem. I started just listening to the songs on their myspace, but then found a lot of stuff on youtube. Of course, when I have money I will be purchasing their albums, mostly as a point of principle, but also because then I can rip them to my comp and mp3 players and have them everywhere. What I like is that they change their sound a lot from album to album, so you don't get bored with the same stuff over and over, but each one still has a similar feel...you'll get some stuff that's really heavy, and other stuff that's bluesy or even reminiscent of Hendrix. Their instrumental tracks, like Mother of Serpents and Ivixor B, I could just listen to on a loop for 15-20 mins.

@ everybody else

in defense of cookie monster vocals, from Amon Amarth or any other band, they grow on you. I wasn't a big fan when I first heard them, mainly because my favorite band at the time was the Misfits, which despite being some pretty ragged punk, had vocals which were inspired by Italian operatic singers, and even 50's doo-wop. But if you think that Amarth songs lack melody, I don't know what to say.

If you're not already a fan, definitely check out Twilight of the Thunder God first. A little more "mainstream" but straight up some killer songs. Also, read the lyrics while you listen. You'll appreciate them more because they're genuinely awesome, and you'll be able to follow along better.

My boy... you are sounding ignorant. Sorry but you are... You are only saying what some metal sounds like not all metal sounds the same. black metal is differnt from heavy metal. Heavy metal is differnt from industrial metal. Same as Goth is differnt from emo or country is differnt from rock.

Okay, well I was reffering to the metal that has a singer and music that sounds like that posted in the OP. I have come across SOOO much music that sounds exactly like that but is different songs. Like if you didn't listen to them together you wouldn't be able to tell them apart at all. Or unless you were an expert in the field. Metal that is not like that I do not include in my discussion. I was reffering to that sound. Being that I do not like this sound, I have not put much effort into discovering the different categories. Could you please link me some to show me?

I get how death metal and heavy metal are different, but why do metal fans always have to break the genre up into hundreds of sub-genres? Really, they're just trying to sound like they're different from every other band out there, and are doing something "new and revolutionary". I mean, I like metal and all but I don't get why people have to divide it up so much just because of an extra instrument of technique they use some of the time.

Wow, just looked up different genres of metal, and I must say, if those are all different genres, then no two songs ever made are the same genre.

I call it metal in general. But to help describe the differnt sounds of the music I go to those sub catagories. DOnt get me started they go deeper than this. EBM and DPM or whatever inside for industrial... it gets crazy. Mostly these are made by the elitest of each kind of genre of music

Interesting and very different from the video I watched. So... what exactly ARE the prerequisites for being considered metal?

I dont think her style would fit well with skyrim... maybe Oblivion... Maybe but not Skyrim.

I have no real idea and its hard for me to tell. Because some get really close to sounding like rock I just go by what the artist says they are and at other times I go by what the fans say. It gets really hard its confusing because Metal has so many differnt genres and some genres of metal have sub genres in them. even Itunes gets these confused and even the record companies. Some metal sings about Vikings others about old NES games while others are about Startrek and some about D&D. while others sing about love or freedom.

Doesn't seem to be a very well designed genre does it? Then again, very few genres are. I mean what is easy to tell what it is? Country... rap... folk.... jazz... that's probably about it. Rock has about a million genres and a lot of the time I don't know if something is rock or metal or punk. Pop is very vague... upbeat popular music basically (except the times when it's not so upbeat). I don't really know how you expected me not to be ignorant of the different types of metal when there seem to be hardly any guidelines at all other than what a band decide to call something.

Theres way to tell but im not a expert on it and when I ask they only thing I get as a answer is "if you have to ask you are not metal and should stop pretending" All genres are hard for me do define. am I listening to hip hop or R&B?

@DragonBone

The more you listen to Metal the more you can distinguish one band from another, its like that with ALL genres of music, if you don't really listen to it, it all sounds the same to you when it really isn't. Plus it really is important to read the lyrics if you don't understand them, i didn't at first either but the more you listen the more you begin to understand, a lot of metal musicians write some pretty damn good lyrics, Amon Amarth included, me i listen to ALL genres of music, and get this Bob Dylan is in my top 5 artists of all time, but metal is where my love of music began, its where my heart truly lies. I am and always will be, a Metal Head.

All Metal genres have a common origin. However, what it is really hard to say is when something stops to be Metal (you know, there are some bands that claim to be metal, but actually they are not it, nor something even close to it)... Anyway, music must be enjoyed for what it is, not for its genre. I like Metal in general, although not every band and not every sub genre, obviously. It's a very eterogeneic group of music. And of course, I don't listen only to Metal. You have mentioned Bob Dylan, haven't you? Well, I think he is great... as I think Iron Maiden is.

I usually find blood more effective than music for quenching bloodthirst.

EDIT: ARGH! I hate that music! It has no tune, it's just harsh crackling set to blurred and muddled guitar riffs! Every song in that style sounds identical!
