Carriage system is in.

Yeah, it sounds like normal Oblivion fast travel, but instead of the major cities already being unlocked at the beginning, you can go to them the first time by paying for a carriage.

Yeah but just as people who dislike fast travel now got a valid alternative to get around fast in the world, you still got your valid alternative to use fast travel anywhere you want to; and you can still completely not choose to use carriages at all.

All you gotta do is not talk to the travel NPCs and you're fine...

Although I agree that if I were you, I would still also prefer not being able to travel at all to a city before visiting it first.
But it would be really illogical if you only use travel services as soon you visited the city by foot first. But despite this being illogical, I agree with you. They could have made so that you can't use travel services to a major city, but have to walk to it first. It would have been better. FORCING you to discover a major city by foot is an amazing experience to be honest.

If Bethesda doesn't change this, it's not the biggest deal in the world though. Since once you've discovered that city, you would be able to travel to it anyway. It's not a great loss, but it's still kind of a loss from my eyes as well, yeah.

This is great news!
However, a concern would be that it might just end up being fast-travel with a payment fee and nothing else, hopefully it will be a bit different with some interactions and such.

I pray to the gods this travel is:
- in real time
- subject to random bandit/creature packs attacks (with a % chance so as not to be too annoying)
- not like silt striders that were ALWAYS there in the station, I hope there is a real time perpetual come and go schedule like the boats in World of Warcraft, where you sometimes need to wait for the next one

Don't forget, if in real time, there MUST be an easy way of actually fast travelling... like pressing a button.
Otherwise we're not talking about fast travel anymore.

But yes, I also think what you said would be nice. I wouldn't be devastated if it's not in though. I'm happy enough just to have an alternative to OB fast travel.

This is one feature I always loved in Morrowind and I'm happy I have an alternative to one click fast travel. I also hope we can attack these carriages, kill the passengers and the driver and use it ourselves :hubbahubba:

Didn't say I had any problem with it, I was just trying to decipher the interview answer.

I take this to mean they are throwing us Morrowind fans a bone and putting in something like the Siltstriders. Likely Mammoths/Mastodons.

Fast Travel will still be there, but you will get to use the above the 1st time you visit places besides riding horses or walking.

I think that is a great compromise!

(Watch it turn out to be some silly frilly horse carriage for lovers)

I'd like that, nothing compares to waiting for the carriage to come while staring at the purses of the other travelers.

I agree. I hope it is something exotic and not literally some silly 18th or 19th century horse drawn carriage. It would jar my sensibilities too much when taken with the rest of the fantasy Nordic ambience. Wheeled vehicles wouldn't make any sense in a very mountainous land, but something like a mammoth howdah or a palanquin supported between two giants would fit right in. Whatever they give us I hope its weird and epic!

I don't really get what's wrong with carriages with horses in front of them, they have been used throughout the entire history. It isn't really that technologically advanced

I'm making this just in case some of you aren't going to go to the IGN thread. Basically, it has been confirmed that there is a carriage system. You can use it kind of as an alternative to the fast-travel I guess...

http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158651p1.html

Could the interviewer ask more obvious questions?

"Will it still be an open-world style experience where you can choose to either follow along with a main story or branch off and spend hours exploring and completing side quests?" - HURR DURR :bonk:

Luckily, Todd's not a moron and gave some pretty sick answers.

If it is like the systems in Morrowind it will only take you to certain cities. You have to be in one city (where you pick up the coach) and can then go to select cities on the coaches route. Not all cities will be able to be reached from any other city. You may need to make a few stops to get where you are going. Anything not in the cities (or cities that don't have coach access) will require walking, including going to and from all quest locations like forts, caves, etc... until you've been there then you can fast travel like OB.

Edit: That is why I liked MW's system so much. Not all cities were accessible via silt strider and not all silt striders went to every city where silt striders were located. Sometimes you had to go to multiple cities to get where you wanted. It was still quicker than walking and maintained an RP aspect. Some cities you needed the mages guild to teleport you there or you needed to take a boat (if you didn't want to walk). Some cities had no transportation so you had to walk.

Tell that to the pre-Columbian South Americans. ;)

Actually carriages, as in vehicles designed specifically for personal transport rather than war, were very rare for most of human history. There was a brief development of them in early Imperial Rome and I think somewhere else in ancient China, but they vanished once those civilisations collapsed. They didn't return till the late Middle Ages and even then were limited to nobility/wealthy until after the Renaissance. Almost everyone else in every period before and even till the 19th C either walked or rode animals.

So to me they are a blinding anachronism and simply wouldn't be practical in a country full of rough terrain, steep inclines and frequent snow. But I suppose that's my own cross to bear. :)

I hope the carriages will take you to several of the small settlements, not just the 5 big cities. Good to know it's in, so modders can immediately do a lot with it.

I think the best part of this info is that we will finally be able to kill any fast travel threads in a few posts, and significantly reduce the number of repeat topics. Now if they could just confirm DRM, the skills, and a few other things and we won't have to see the same posts 5 times a week.

Also, Yay for Fast Travel Alternatives!

They have taken you from the Imperial City's prison, first by carriage, now by boat.

Don't blame people for wanting more. This is humanity. To blame them would be to blame yourself and everyone else.

Mankind has always wanted more. Whether it's money, land, power, more features in a video-game, etc etc...

I'm not saying this is right, but I'm saying not to blame it.
