Reinstalled Oblivion, crashes on load

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:23 am

I've been having multiple issues with my game lately which has caused me to resort to uninstalling it. Sorry for making so many topics lately, but it seems the more I mess with it the worse it gets, and I really need help.

I am pretty sure I uninstalled everything and even deleted the entire "Oblivion" folder from the Bethesda Softworks directory. However, I noticed that when I opened up Wrye Bash it was apparently a bit confused, thinking that I still had mods that I no longer have. So then I also uninstalled everything having to do with Wrye Bash. I can't find any Mod Manager files so I'm not 100 percent certain that it was removed properly.

Anyway, I reinstalled Oblivion and the Shivering Isles/KotN from the Game of the Year disks that I bought a few years ago. Now every time I try to launch it, even vanilla, it crashes as soon as it gets past the "Bethesda" splash. Now my game is 100 percent unplayable and I have no knowledge of how to fix it. Please help...

Is this problem of yours related to this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1151668-obmm-vs-bash-causing-constant-crashes/?

I'd just invest the 10 minutes and erase everything from any previous Oblivion install and make a fresh install.

If you are unwilling to do that just yet, you can try to delete the Oblivion.ini file (resides in /MyGames/Oblivion) and fire up the game again. It will build a new default .ini for itself, and often times that helps.

I was pretty sure I did uninstall everything, but I forgot about the files in the My Games folder. Thank you. I'll try that now.

Edit: Thanks very much, deleting the files from the My Games folder fixed the issue with it not launching properly. If I have any more issues I'll post in this topic. Thanks so much for your help.

By the description of your recent experiences it seems like you're using Windows 7, or Vista, and installing Oblivion to the default directory of Program Files. Is that correct? If so that's likely the cause for past, current, and soon to be, future issues. Windows doesn't like it when an application, program, or even the user, attempts to alter files in a protected directory. UAC sees this a potential security threat and treats it as a malicious attack and blocks the action from happening.

I strongly encourage you to reinstall Oblivion to an unprotected directory so UAC will not interfere. A popular and suitable location is :\Games\Oblivion.

Ah, yes, that is an issue I have, however I disabled User Account Controls entirely, and never really had those sorts of issues before... but as you say I'll move things around there.

now Im' stuck on reinstallnig Wrye Bash, because apparently the link here to get Wrye Bash http://wryemusings.com/Wrye%20Bash.html#GetandInstall is broken... I tried to just download the installer from http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368 after installing the Python components... now the Wrye Bash Launcher is an unfamiliar green snake icon and when I launch it, it doesn't bring up the familiar Wrye Bash but just some liscense and copyright message.
