If you go backwards right after you're pit into the arena, you manage to exit the place before the door closes, leaving you locked outside without any means to resume combat other than reloading a previous save.

I haven't checked but it's even possible that ED-E may manage to kill the enemy or enemies for you if you leave it at a suitable spot outside (seeing as he helped
me to kill Benny...).
