Game "crashes" on saving - any type

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:15 am

EDIT: it appears that saving doesn't crash the game at all; it just takes a very, very long time, makes the game freeze, and the sound loop. If I alt-tab out while it's in progress, the game does crash. The other information I've provided is correct though.

Hello,

Today, after loading my most recent save, I attempted to move into a different zone, at which point the game crashed. I then resolved to use the console code to travel to my destination, hopefully circumventing this particular issue. When I quicksaved before doing this, however, the game crashed again. Further experimentation has confirmed that the game crashes whenever I save it - whether the save is quick, auto, or manual. I should note that up to this morning the game had run spotlessly in its ~40 hours of playtime.

I have one mod and one fix installed - the factionless NCR Ranger combat armour and the Direct3D framerate fix - but I've tried the game with both of them disabled/uninstalled and it still doesn't work.

I'm not sure whether the game actually crashes as such. The sound starts looping and it's uncontrollable, but sometimes after I ctrl+alt+del out, I can go back into the game to find that it's saved fine and is now working alright. Other times I get "FalloutNV has stopped working". Whichever of those happens, the game does actually save and I am able to continue from the crash-causing save when I start the game up again. Can anybody help me?

Here is my DXDIAG:

No idea if this could possibly be related, but it used to be that when I alt-tabbed out, the song on the radio would continue playing normally. Now the sound loops, just like during the freeze, although it skips forward to the position it should be at when I alt-tab back.

I had this issue when I had altered my timescale to = 1 for some reason. Probably unrelated though, unless you've also altered the timescale.

If you haven't- have you tried turning off the radio and seeing if the problem persists? I had some odd issue with codecs causing crashes on fast-travel while listening to the radio. That was a hard one to diagnose.

Thanks for your suggestions! I've tried editing the timescale and turning off the radio, but neither seem to have resolved the issue. My experimentation with them has kind of clarified it, though: it seems that the game doesn't crash when I save, it just takes a long, long time. Not perfect, but it's still far more tolerable than restarting the game after every save.

A couple things I can think of:

How large are you save games?
Do you have an idea of what your memory usage is while the game is saving (when you've brought up task manager)?
How much free space do you have on your hard drive and how large is your page file (if you're using win 7 just search "pagefile" in the start menu the help topic will point you to that info)?
How defragmented is your hard disk and does it take a very long time to start the game as well?
Try starting a new game to test if this issue is also present in a fresh playthrough from the beginning- this will help suggest whether it is a general problem like a memory leak or an issue specific to your current playthrough.

Your save files should not be larger than 10 megs. Even if they were 40 megs it would be unlikely to be the sole source of your problem, but may be indicative of something causing there to be a whole lot of unnecessary info in them. If they're stupidly large then we have a more obvious problem.

It's also possible that if memory useage is unreasonably high or if you are close to maxing out on system resources that your save information may be being pulled from a combination of memory and a heavily fragmented page file. This could compound long save times and if you were extremely close to running out of system memory then I could imagine unusually long save times. It is possible, if this is a completely new issue and occurs even in a fresh new play through, that this may be caused by a memory leak introduced in recent patches although this would be slightly odd as reports of NEW memory leaks post patch have been sparse.

For clarity, what are you system specs?

Hope I can help!

Hi Armaros,
Looking at your DXDiag, interesting rig.
Hi-end PC from ~2007, plenty of CPU.
Updated to 2010 with lots of memory.
Bit soft in the vidcard (by today's standards), 9800 with 512MB.
Perfectly nice vidcard though - but I hope you're not trying to run with AA, or vsync heheh...
Giant RAID 0 array, using the motherboard hardware not Windows, good call.
But I'm concerned - motherboard chipset drivers for your mobo do not appear to be installed.
What is the exact model # of your mobo?
You can use http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html to help get information.
Not sure if issues are sound-related...? but maybe.
Regards

Edit: Forgot to mention, the Playing Cards caused crash on save for me.
Once I got rid of them (every last one) my crashes stopped...

If from the following it's not obvious what the problem could be, don't worry about it - I just got my way through the last hour or so using the minimum number of saves possible, and I think I'm going to need some time to recover before my next playthrough (oh lordy was my ending poignant). Thanks so much for being willing to help in any case.

  • My saved games all seem to be around 6MB in size
  • When I saw the task manager while it was running, it was using around 400K of memory, out of 8GB
  • I have to admit I'm not very attentive when it comes to defragmenting, so my hard drive's probably not in the best of states! The game starts up really quite quickly though.
  • My specs are: Intel Core 2 Extreme X9650 @ 3GHz, 2 9800GX2s (sli is broken though so I have no idea what combination they're working in), 8GB terrible 667MHz RAM, my paging file is 8489MB

You can probably tell that it's rather a good machine in the hands of a rather incompetent user. I'll take your advice about trying a new game when I can summon the willpower; if this is any help, though, I loaded a save from the same playthrough from about 10 hours ago and the same issue affected that. Thanks again!

My motherboard is a P5N-E SLI guy, and to be honest I'm afraid to do anything remotely related to it. I gather updating the chipset could solve my SLI issues (according to the testimony of some people who had similar issues in the past), but for now I'm happy leaving well enough alone :D

I just started facing similar problems myself.

The game would quicksave, autosave, and manually save just fine, but any future saves, half-an-hour into the game, and it'll crash. I can't progress any further in my game because of the new patch. I tried running with and without mods and the problem would persist. This never happened before the patch so I'm fairly certain it has little to do with my rig or mods.

Please Bethesda/Obsidian, fix this problem in the next patch :brokencomputer:

My crashing when saving problem seems to have been solved by running the MasterUpdate process of FNVEdit. Just make a copy of FNVEdit, rename it to FNVMasterUpdate, and run that application.

Also try disabling the framerate fix, I've not had to use it but as I understand it may not be compatible (and not needed?) with the latest patch.

ETA: Oh also are you reusing old save slots, or does this happen when using a new save slot too? Or are you storing loads of different types of loot in one container? That last question may seem odd, but in Oblivion there was a rare bug that caused a CTD on saving or corrupted the save if you filled a container with too many items (long list of items rather than 2000 of 1 item), it wasn't well documented because so few people encountered it and it took me ages to figure it out - just wondering because it's the same game engine if FONV could have the same issue?

Armaros,
Make sure to install this package:
Nvidia Chipset Driver Package V1.12 for32& 64bit Windows Vista
...from the http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us.
Your product is a motherboard, Socket 775, then P5N-E SLI is right there on the list (near the bottom).
There is only 1 driver offered called 'Chipset'. Install it.
I can't link directly to this 44MB package (because of Asus javascript and security).
Also-
Your latest BIOS is 1406 (2009/11/30 update).
You can use CPU-Z to see what your BIOS version is - or use the excellent ASUSUpdate tool.
You can download the new BIOS to a file on your desktop, then let the Asus tool update BIOS from this file - and within Windows!
It's safe and foolproof to update BIOS this way. (No floppy boot disks or DOS required, heheh...)
Anyway - there have been many recent BIOS updates for your rig (all addressing 'issues').
Update your BIOS, install your Chipset and tune up your SLI and your rig.
You will wonder why you never got around to it before...!
