As the topic says, ever since a few days ago (I'm not sure if that was before or after the patch) Steams 'preparing to start' window constantly flickers as if the moment the program is about to load but doesn't and the process repeats.. constantly until I manage to close it. I've tried dragging the games exe to desktop to see if that would work but it still happens. Has anyone seen this issue and is there a fix or work around for it?

Sorry, but that's nowhere near to being a complete problem report, so there's almost no way to even guess. When you really want the answer, you need to give all the needed information.

If you are in the wrong forum, that might be understandable, but this is not for the console versions in here.

I believe the OP uses a computer because he can close processes and talks about Steam.

To OP: does it flicker when you start Steam or when you start Fallout New Vegas? Also please post a dxdiag.

Steam is working fine, this is happening when I start Fallout: New Vegas specifically and the issue does not occur with any other steam games. And as I said, the issue began a few days ago. Game was loading and running fine Thursday or Friday afternoon but when I loaded it today the issue began. I know we got a patch very recently so I wonder if that is somehow tied into the problem.

I see you have a quad core cpu. Have you tried the quad core fix? Are you also sure all your drivers are up to date?

I don't see any other real problem with your hardware (I believe it exceeds the recommended system requirements) but maybe someone more knowledgable could spot a possible problem with your dxdiag.

If nothing works you could also try and reinstall it. Maybe something went wrong with patching, if possible.

Quad Core Fix? I haven't heard of it, is it for this game specifically?

And I tried re-installing overnight and I thought perhaps it was going to work because the 'preparing to load xxx' screen stayed up for a few seconds and then faded (as if the game was going to load) but than immediately it came back and started flickering again. I also verified the game cache and it was missing one file but that didn't fix the issue either. If I cant find a solution I may contact Steam Support. Searching Google it appears to have happened with other games (though oddly most of the threads I find via the search pertain to Macbooks.)

UPDATE: I found a fix. It is one of the first things I should have tried but it slipped my mind at the time. I deleted the clientregistery.blob from steam, shut it down and reloaded it. Got a quick update and the starting the game loads the launch screen right away now, no more errors. I cant say I know why it worked, only that it worked. Thanks for the help folks.
