Daggerfall without DOSBox

I found a way to get Daggerfall to work without DOSBox while expirementing with the 'z.cfg' file....

First i right clicked and said edit. Oh yea, you might want to copy it and put it somewhere so if u do something wrong u can fix it.

type dfall_huge
path c:\dagger\arena2\
pathcd c:\dagger\arena2\
fadecolor 0
mapfile d
rendergame 1
user 1
startMap 179
region 17
helmet 0
maxSpeed 200
controls betaplyr.dat
maps mapsave.sav This is what i saw, but i looked at path. That wasn't the path to where my dagger fall game is stored...>:(

So i changed the

path c:\dagger\arena2\
pathcd c:\dagger\arena2\

to my daggefall path, thus being...

path c:\games\dagger\arena2
pathcd c:\games\dagger\arena2 And then 'NoCD' Worked fine, and without a problem. I Guess i should have seen if the game ran anyfaster with DOSBox now. Only problem with the NoCD thing is that it is very hard to attack, i dont know why, but swinging your weopen is close to impossible for some odd reason....

So yea in 'path' and 'pathcd' just put where the game is on your c:\ drive, like if ur name was bob...

path c:\bobs\software\games\dagger\arena2
pathcd c:\bobs\software\games\dagger\arena2

So yea just put in your file location.

Anyways, keep a copy of your original Z.CFG file as well!!!

the only thing that doesn't work well is attacking

And walking backwards, swimming, climbing, the jitterbugging NPCs and seeing the quest items/monsters.

XD oh mah bad, i was just in it for a couple second, still in the first place, brigadiers cave or whatever...

...it runs so slow in DOSBox that i cant get out cus the game is to slow for me to beat a skeleton soldier guy....it always lags and i die

in dos box config i have CPU cycles set to max and that really helps, and usually a game plays better with frameskip, but not Elder Scrolls!....

>:(
and walking backwards works fine for me. For some reason the default key for it is 2 onthe num pad to go backwards...i dont even remember the last time i played a game that needed the number pad...but i switched the controls so that 4 was left, 8 was forward, 6 was right, and 5 was backwards and the normal movements workedfine for me

Setting maximum CPU cycles isn't always helpful. In fact, I often had games go jittery and laggy (especially in sound) due to setting the cycles too high. Generally, games where DosBox switches from numerical to percentage display for CPU use are fine with going 100% (though there are exceptions), while games where it remains numerical should keep the cycles somewhat down. Not sure how it'll work for you, but generally 10000-15000 cycles work fine for me.

When we say you shouldn't run DF without DOSbox, it's not that you can't--you can, easily. It will run, but it won't run properly.

And walking backwards, swimming, climbing, the jitterbugging NPCs and seeing the quest items/monsters.

Yup, and sneaking, jumping, and levitating.

Gah, sorry. I later read your specs in another thread. I'm afraid it's not really up to the task of OS-emulation, at least not with 3D stuff in the equation.

As an alternative to DosBox, you could try using a slow-down program like MoSlo to make Daggerfall run more... properly? DF runs like crazy on a modern system due to the calculations being done on an ASAP basis, so you see NPCs doing something like 100 AI checks a second so they don't get to move at all in between them. Of course, using a slow-down program won't beat using DosBox (it'll either be too choppy or still suffer of some, albeit lesser, excessive amount of calculations), but it ought to be a viable alternative.

If that doesn't work too well, then the only thing I can currently imagine helping would be a processor upgrade.
