Daggerfall: Vagrancy

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:20 pm

I've just started playing Daggerfall again (great game - it's got me hooked already)

But there's one thing I can't get to grips with.

I can try to break into a house, and nobody cares unless I try it twice in a row.

I'm attacked by a monster in town at night and there's no guard in sight to help me.

But god forbid I even CONSIDER taking a nap in, or even near town.

The second I try to rest, probably before my character even lies down, I hear a cacophony of "Halt! Halt!" from all directions.

What are these guards doing? I try to grab a bit of shut-eye just outside the town and I've got legions of cops on me in a matter of seconds.

So, I'm assuming these guards are lying in wait - they see an archer, giant rat, ghost or burglar attacking a resident and just keep waiting, but I consider resting my eyes outside the fighter's guild until it opens and they jump from the bushes with swords drawn waving arrest warrants.

I'm sure the residents of Daggerfall are thrilled to know how the nobles are spending their hard-earned taxes - The streets are overrun with undead every night, there's thieves breaking into buildings whenever they succeed on the first try, but 90% of the town guard is out looking for vagrants!?! Who's in charge of the defense budget?

I can only thank the gods that they don't have the same zeal when it comes to loitering, or I'd be totally screwed.

P.S. This is one thing I think it's hard to argue about Morrowind and Oblivion improving - telling me I can't sleep in town instead of bundling me off to jail for forgetting to press the 'loiter' instead of 'rest' button gets my stamp of approval.

They're obviously getting kickbacks from the local taverns.

And monsters in town? That's what the fighters guild is for!

In all seriousness, though I rather like DF's waiting/resting more than MW and especially more than OB. The 3-hour wait limit and the crime of vagrancy encourage the use of taverns to pass large amounts of time. It just doesn't make sense to stand around for 9 hours waiting like you can in the later titles--sure it's easier, but it's not very realistic.

Oh please, I hardly think the guards job is to guard the town.

The guards are working folks with families! They aren't going to be chasing down monsters and sticking their necks out. They come after you for the same reason most modern cops write tickets: it fills their quota and makes the courthouse some extra money. Guards come after us for looking like gullible goofs.

This topic made me laugh out loud. :P

But yeah, it's true. I've been hauled off to jail more times than I care to remember, because I accidentally pressed the wrong button.

It's worse in Oblivion, where simply touching someone's radish can net you a week in the slammer.

Sounds right to me. You could at least first ask Rabish if he wants to be touched.

radish

Wait, never mind.

only in dag and arena do i get monsters in town.

Actually in morrowind i walked into balmora and was attacked by

1 rat

then another time i was attacked by

1 kagouti

and the third time i was attacked by

a republican

jk on the republican, but monsters are always in towns at night in Dag and Arena, only on 2 occasions were they in a town in morrowind(Because guards dont attack monsters in morrowind)

and in oblivion, unless it was the most awesome, godly monster ever, they would not be in a city, as they are all walled.

The guards don't attack monsters? Heresy! I had Cliff Racers come and the guards decided to try and take em down.

Yep, Cliff racers. One of the more annoying creatures.

Cliff Racers, Kwama Spawn and Kwama Larva were the most annoying creatures in MW for me. And I couldn't play it because it was so boring imho... Oblivion is way way way more fun for me (and more fun to just run around and explore the woods with a legion of daedra following me trying to kill me)

Daggerfall? Never found a monster inside a town, besides for a quest.

Arena? You bet there was a burglar trying to kill me in town during night.

And I never went outside Daggerfall City at night. VENGEANCE!

yeah i was killed by a cliff racer in morrowind just while i was waiting in town, i was lvl one lol
and i didnt look up so none of my slashes hit at all

in oblivion the touching of even a paintbrush even when its worth nothing still gets you a bounty!
and gives you the excuse to massacre the guards when they come:)
