Very heavy health potions

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:13 pm

Ok, when I make health potions combining fly amanita and lavender sprig I get health potion which restores 7 pts for 37 secs. The weird thing is, every single potion weighs 2 units.
I'm at lvl 19 and can see all 4 properties of the ingredient, I've got 3 master and 1 novice alchemy tools.

Where does that come from and how do I change it?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what's causing it, but I know how to fix it: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25714 Works better than the bashed patch tweak because it's dynamic. As soon as you make a potion, it's weight is fixed.

There does seem to be something odd with your game. You can use the http://www.uesp.net/oblivion/alchemy/alc_calc.php to figure out how heavy that potion should be. I don't think it should be that heavy, but I can't remember. See what the Alchemy calculator says.

I don't know if I can just use a calculator if it is a mod I have installed which alters the weight of potions, I mean, the calculator can't know which mods I use.
It seems, right now, it's only health potions which way a ton, no others. Maybe Frans mod, which I have installed, is causing it because it don't want people to run around with 100 health potions which kinda makes one invincible.

Whenever a potion is made with a certain effect, say restore health 7 pts for 37 seconds, the weight is only calculated correctly for the first potion. All other potions with the exact same effects will have the same weight. If your alchemy skill increases, and the effect increases to 7 pts for 38 seconds, the weight for the first potion with that exact effect is calculated correctly again.

That's a bug with the vanilla system, because all hand-made potions with the same effect use the same object/formID, and thus have the same weight.

EDIT: Or indeed a mod could be altering the weight. Have you made any of these 7 pts for 37 seconds potions before, but with heavy ingredients? If you did, that's certainly the problem, otherwise you're right about a mod altering the weight.

To be more specific: if you made a Restore Health potion out of, say, boar meat and venison, it's going to weigh 2. If these were the ingredients for the first potion you made that yielded 7 points for 37 seconds, that 2 pound weight will apply to all potions with identical effect, even if they're made from much lighter ingredients. As MrFurious said, this is just a flaw in the vanilla system. And as andalaybay said, TheNiceOne's Lightweight Potions is the #1 quality solution.

I'd say it's what MrFurious said. Health potions can be made with heavy ingredients like venison or boar meat and most likely that's what you did the first time you created a potion of that type.

You could also sell those heavy potions and brew new ones with lighter ingredients.

What you can also do, instead of installing Lightweight Potions, is upon your next brewing session (but still at the same Alchemy level) with lighter ingredients, give the potion a different name like "Restore Health Light" for example. Then it will not take on the weight of the "old" heavy ones.

And if I'm not mistaken, when you gain another skill level in Alchemy and then brew new restore health potions (which are now stronger), and you use lighter ingredients for them, the new level potions will weigh according to the new ingredients, even if you do not rename these potions as per above. They will appear twice in your inventory, having the same names but different strength and weight.

Having said all that, Lightweight Potions is a really handy mod. I use it and I like it. I have set all my potions at equal weight of 0.2 each.

You can also try this one out, it automatically keeps the weight of potions you make low. It is very customizable and i still need to learn things with it, but i am really beginning to like this mod. :)
