Preload is now available on Steam!

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:29 am

Hadn't thought about the game for a month or so but saw the TV commercial for the release of Fallout: New Vegas on the Dusk channel a few times yesterday which reminded me that it was being relaesed soon. Just pre-ordered off of Steam and am currently downloading the pre-load. Looking forward to release date.

That is what my store clock is showing - 2 Days, 0 Hours.

Why does Steam even bother with unlock clocks? They haven't been accurate for the last 3 games I followed using them until literally the last few hours before unlock, when they suddenly change to be accurate. It's like Valve programmed them using Valve Time math or something.

Valve time is one thing that makes Valve unique. Without it, they would lose some of their edge, and would probably lose quite a bit of their fanbase.

Really? Valve would lose quite a bit of their fanbase if "soon" didn't mean "when we feel like it" or "later on today" didn't mean "in a week"? Cause I gotta say, I doubt that. Professionalism is professionalism. If you don't give a time or date for something, fine. But if you tell people, as a company, that you'll do something "later today" and you get around to it 4 days later with no update or notice, that's just amateurism. I've gotten a chuckle out of the wink-wink nature of the whole thing in the past, but the joke has long since gotten old for me.

Where's HL2: Ep 3, Valve? :stare:

I watched the countdown clocks for both Mafia 2 and Dead Rising 2 on Steam, and Steam left them untouched, showing the wrong time, until 2 hours before the official unlock time, and then they changed it from 10 AM to 12 AM. And it's like no one at Valve noticed until the forum boards at Steampowered exploded with people tearing their hair out. A Valve employ posted at 10 PM and said a curt "fixed - unlock will happen at midnight". Just seems very slipshod to me.

So can someone confirm what's going on with the Australian release? According to that post it should release at the same time as Europe, but my steam is clearly showing this:

Available: 19 October 2010
This game will unlock in approximately 9 hours

Now I haven't bothered to do the math, but that seemls like it's before the American release? That means that it's wrong, but at the same time in stores it's releasing on the 21st, which is AFTER the North American release but BEFORE the European release, which just makes my head hurt - are we going to get it the same time as North America, which would be 6pm in Australia on the 19th?

I'm awfully confused.

Check the steam forum and see what happening? Maybe someone there might be asking the same question as you are

I have the same thing. But i was smart enough to pre-order it before the price went up. I suspect that you did the same and we have a "US" key, so it will unlock same time as the US. Since the unlock date hasnt changed on my end since the price rise i cant confirm that. But thats what i suspect.

Who knows with Valve.

Where can I buy a download of the US Version if I am outside the US? Seems that Steam is doing GeoIP detection and tells me of the crippled German version (which I definitely do not want) and a price tag of 50 Euros (which at current exchange rates is much more than 50 Dollars).

Only if your in the U.S
That why it's release in the U.S early cause it sell in the U.S :celebration:
In Steam and the game itself you can change the verison to english anyway.
If you still want the U.S version wait till next month to get it

how is the German version crippled? Can't you just buy a boxed version from the UK/France or something?

You can't, it's not something Valve allow. But you could import the US version on disc, from amazon.com, ebay.com or something. The extra costs for shipping aren't that high either. Or import it from UK, but then you get the european prices + shipping.

Low Violence! It's been this way since, at least, Fallout 2. I always bought imported US versions. I could buy the Austrian version because Austrian dealers actually promote it as being the "real" German (=uncrippled) version. But I don't care for German language. I played all Fallout titles in English.

I feel for the nanny-staters who get a watered down version of the game.

However, your people wanted that nannying so there ya go.

Quite odd that it seems, according to Steam, Australia is going to get the game unlocked first, which is now in about 4hours time. Of course thats going to be something like 3:30am. Could stay up and see what happens, though wee bit late to play the game.

Direct2Drive might be possible. They will have US keys on their US site.

Actually that's just a little after 2 PM for me, so I'll be interested to see what happens. I doubt it will unlock, but maybe it will make Valve finally get off their lazy butts and update their countdown clocks to show the actual time Bethesda told them to unlock the game.

Thanks for the tip but clicking the Buy Download button redirects me to an empty shopping cart page. I hate GeoIP. Why can't they just charge my credit card and start the download? Well, I am neither US citizen nor resident but reading about citizens abroad who are currently locked out makes me hope that this policy is destined to change in the future.

Edit: Sorry, that was GameStop. I'll try D2D next...
