Vegas still crashes from time to time

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 12:45 am

hey, I really enjoy vegas, but even after the 1.2 patch that was auto installed by steam, the game still crashes frequently for me. I have updated my nvidia graphics card to the best there is, I completly overshoot the minimum requirements, so WHY are there still these problems? and is there anything I can do against it?

I try to re-boot after every hour or so of playing and it seems to have helped me though I am playing on a 3yr old PC with an AMD FX-62 dual core at 2.8GHz and a Nvidia 8800GTX.

I went for about 40 hours without a crash, then one evening I got two in the space of an hour and one every 5-10 hours after that. Seems the larger a save gets the greater propensity of crashing for me.

Fallout 3 had the same problems as well. The game engine itself is rather unstable. If you are on PC and playing with mods, it can increase this. But even without them, crashes and lock ups are sadly to be expected. Save your game often and keep multiple save files, so that when (not if) it crashes, you don't have to go back and redo hours of play.

I bought FO3 very late, a year so so after. so everything was fine since i immediatly patched it before even playing. will these problems also be solved (hopefully) with the next patch?

Maybe over the next half dozen patches. Every patch seems to break as much as it fixes.

And if it goes as usual, there'll be a large number of lesser issues that won't ever get an official fix. On the PC you can at least get the unofficial patches the modding community puts out, but consolers are S.O.L.

Before update game froze fron using V.A.T.S.
From update 1.2 it started shutdown the computer after couple minutes of playing.
For while it worked ok, but after vault 22 on BoS mission the crashing started.
And the saved games also are corrupted...

Mmmm..... Not always true.

I am crash free on New Vegas (Have Been for over a week now) and I was crash free on Fallout 3 as well (After the Quad Core .ini fix)

I traced my crashes on my system to 2 things for Fallout New Vegas.

1) Non-Windows codecs (Not just the well know FFDSHOW issue).

2) Just like Fallout 3, Fallout New vegas is not completely Quad Core compatible and the .ini Quad Core fix is required as well.

Of Course, the above solution applies to the following system.

Quad Core Q660 2.4 Ghz
Nvidia 250 1GB (260.99 driver)
500 GB Western Digital HD
2 GB Ram
Realtek On-Board Sound (2.54 driver)
Windows XP SP3
Direct X 9.0c (Updated)
Fallout New Vegas Updated to 1.2

There still remains the numerous other bugs left in the game - but Freezes and CTD's are completely gone for me.

I logged many hours on Fallout 3 using the original non-GOTY release with no DLCs or mods and never experienced one crash, not a single one. I experienced the odd havok issues such as flying deathclaws and floating things, etc. but it never once crashed on me

My PC at the time had an nvidia geforce 9800 GT and a core 2 duo (don't remember the processor). Now when I upgraded to the GOTY version I did start seeing some crashes but it was very rare. I crashed near the UFO site and also sometimes at Enclave camps (oddly Enclave soldiers showed up early in the game near where their bases were later on). These were similar crash points to GOTY console versions and most likely because of DLC 'hooks' or something like that.

When I upgraded my PC to a quad core I experienced freezing at times, usually after opening a door or sometimes out in the wastes. I did some placebo suggestions and actually had many hours into it without freezing. I thought it was fixed of possibly lessened, but nope. It froze again totally random but this time it would CTD (previously the music would continue playing and you'd have to kill that task from task manager). I narrowed this down to one thing, saying in the .ini file that you only have two HW threads. This is what I believe is the so-called quad core fix but like I said, the freeze is still there but now it will CTD. This was wrongly attributed to windows 7 when in fact it happens on Vista as well (with core 2 quad or any core i series CPU)

New Vegas does the freeze to CTD with similar frequency as FO3 with the hardware threads limited to 2. So they changed something, but they didn't fix it. Must be related to multi-threading.. Task manager shows the game runs over 40 threads
