What is wrong with my Cowboy Repeater?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:21 pm

Dang nab it!
SInce the latest patch my Cowboy Repeaters' been attracting grit like nobody's business.
It locks out the Escape key, VATS, looting, opening doors. Seems also to fill the keypress stack to boot.
I've tried repairing it, tried upgrading it. I squeeze off a few rounds, reload- and lockdown.
So much for "Periodic maintenance being the key..."
Periodic Saves is more like.

Any weapon that loaded bullets one at a time, from day one, has been buggy (Great Testing !). As of the latest patch - It has only made it worse (Great Testing Again !). The Cowboy Repeater is really Fracked ( BattleStar Galatica ) now.

Known issue - just use it for caps. Perhaps it will get fixed in the next patch (Whats that? 3 patches already and still alot of issues?).

Fallout New Vegas - Unlike most People, I feel paying $50.00 for playing a Beta Version is well worth it ! After all - Look at all the great reviews on the net !

 NOT.

Yup that 1.2 patch did more bad than good. :sadvaultboy:

I too was using the cowboy repeater before the patch installed and afterwards it pretty much killed the game
(Can't open doors, cannot use sights after reloading, jams all the time)

Also the game seem's to pause then lurch me forward every several seconds which I didn't have before the patch.

Worst patch ever!

There are a few other topics about this issue and I'll say it again.
I've had this issue as well *after the 1.2 patch and in FO3* and for me, version b of http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36317 fixed it for me.

Good Catch will have to try it.

EDIT - While it works, it kills the animation. Sorry, not good for me.

What's new with me is the disabled Fast-Reloader-Perk ...
Before the patch all was fine. Now the reload-animation is thaaat slow!

I am having this issue where the keys get locked out, posted it here:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1141127-wierd-issue/

This issue was happening when I was using the cowboy repeater, but it wasn't limited to that. I was also having the issue when using the 10mm submachine gun and once while using the Assault Carbine.

When the keys start getting locked out, I found that I can get things back to normal much quicker by hitting the VATS or Pip Boy key a few times and then try to fire the weapon a few times. Usually, once it snaps back to normal suddenly it'll go into VATS or the Pip Boy (whatever you happened to be hitting, obviously, VATS won't work if enemies aren't in sight). I've had the issue happen at random regardless of what weapon I have out, and it seems to happen most often during or after combat (especially if I used VATS or the game goes into a killcam).

I would like to mention that I do use the Cowboy Repeater a LOT, but as I mentioned before, I was seeing this weird issue with the keys locking out with the 10mm Sub gun as well. I'm in Vault 34 right now and have been switching back and forth between those 2 guns.

When you have this issue happen, does it start to behave like a laggy online game as well, where you are skipping around a bit?

Yep, I wondered if anyone else was having this problem. And I can't search loot containers/dead bodies either which I guess goes along with not being able to shoot/aim/holster/etc.

The skipping around is weird though so I've just given up on the repeater altogether--gave it to Boone and now I'm using a regular hunting rifle.

Just click the fire button once and it will "unlock" the gun so you can use it again. It's a PITA but hopefully they'll have this mess fixed soon enough.

I ditched my USB keyboard and plugged in my PS/2 and my keyboard now works. I have not tested it with every weapon in every situation, but it works with the 10mm machine gun, Service Rifle, Shotgun, and Plasma Rifle. I still get the slowed-down animations. It also gave me back the console commands.

At least now I know that the problems I was experiencing yesterday are related to the Cowboy Repeater. Besides having the key problems I had real bad lock-ups that I could only get out of by rebooting. That is really unusual for my Q6600 quad-core processor. Over the past couple of years of use I have had almost no lockups. So anyway guys... thanks for the info.

THANK YOU!!!

I tried the "v2_0_1_b" as you suggested and didn't have any more stuck or unresponsive keys. Played for about 3 hours in the same areas I was having problems with before and all went without a hitch.

It warned it made the animations weird, but they look fine to me, just a little different and really you don't notice in 1st person.

Yeah, I'm using that one too. It stinks that the animations change, but it's just a stop-gap until the official fix is out, so whatevz.

So from what I can tell this only happens if you start a reload while you are crouched. It acts like it is locking up all your keys besides strict movement, and your character moves weird while you're in this state (I imagine because of conflicts in Havok).

The reason you're stuck is because there's a script that triggers when you reload this and any other type of weapon where you hand feed the ammunition one cartridge at a time. The additional script that is playing is the one that allows you to interrupt the reload before the clip is full, by firing the weapon (thus giving the player a means to escape the reload and fire the weapon immediately if they need to).

What locks you up is that this script doesn't kill properly. Lots of things modify your reload speed, but this script isn't killing when the reload animation ends if the animation is started while you're in the crouched position, and while it's running you're still considered to be in a "reloading" state which prevents you from doing things like sighting the gun or entering the Pip-Boy.

You can work around this by pulling the trigger once every time you finish a reload. It will kill that script and return your functionality to normal, and won't actually fire the weapon. If you were standing when the reload started this shouldn't be necessary; you can tell if you're "stuck" in this script by trying to sight the gun - if it doesn't seem to transition to iron sights properly, just pull the trigger and it will immediately jump to normal iron sights.
