Is there any cure for corrupted savegames?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:30 pm

It's not that I have had any real problems yet, but once my game CTD'd when exiting a merchant and the autosave was corrupted, I could load the quicksave, though.
I have been away from Oblivion for a while, but back then, I remember that suddenly all my savegames could be corrupted and I could do nothing about it.

Is it still like that? That savegames can suddenly be corrupted and that you can do nothing but start all over?

I guess, it's a wise idea to make a backup of ones savefolder under "documents" once in a while, right?

It is the recommended procedure to disable all autosave options that the Oblivion.ini and/ or the in-game options propose/ allow. I'd recommend to use Streamline's Streamsave option to make saves at regular timed intervals (say every 5min or whatever). Forget about all these saving on fast-travel, save on sleeping, save on resting, save on fighting, save after fighting... if you need specific guidance I can post you my SL .ini file. I have not yet had a corrupt savegame file, so I guess I've done it OK.

Generally you cannot have too many backups of everything related to Oblivion... :)

So, will streamline save a new save everytime or overwrite? Why is it recommended to disable autosave?

If I install streamlines streamsave, I will contact you for your ini. file, thanks.

It's a new save every time. You can tell SL how many save slots you want to use, I think up to 50. Then it only overwrites the oldest (no. 1) with the 51st save and goes through the rotation again. I use 30 slots.

Why is it recommended to disable autosave?

So that unfortunate gamers like you need not post about corrupt autosaves... The real reason I just don't know.

If you install SL, in any case read the readme, it is very well written and explained. SL contains several options, you may not need or want all. I only use Streamsave and the memory purge function (if I remember correctly).

It's known that it can cause CTDs, especially with many mods running.

Streamsave does better than Autosave.
If you allow it to keep 30 saves and make it save every 2/3 minutes you should have no problem in reverting to previous saves in case of bloat or corruption, troubleshooting, and at the same time, if you streamsave often, you won't be bothered of deaths happened frequently when running FCOM, OOO, MMM or sutch.

Both my girlfriend and me play the game, can I be sure it won't overwrite my saves when she's playing and the other way around?

Open Wrye Bash saves tab, right click and choose Edit Profile. Create a profile for each of you, and make sure to change the active profile depending on who's playing. *Should* work. :)
