New Todd Howard Interview with IGN

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:42 am

I bet that's probably why they aren't fully using DirectX11. It would take too much time to fully develop DirectX11 and it lets the modders work on it, also Beth could possibly get new ideas from the modders on how to use the graphics, easily the best of both worlds here.

A smart move indeed , i m impressed.

This came out yesterday since it was still March 31.

Doesn't matter, I'm still paranoid about this O.O

because you're like THEY'RE NOT USING IT BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE CONSOLES SELL LESS COPIES which is [censored].

yeah it would make a difference and yeah the game would totally benefit from it, but the effort required to make that difference http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey simply isn't worth the trouble, especially when you consider that the game's been in development for five years and there are a [censored]load of meshes that they'd have to tessellate. it has nothing to do with CONSOLES - it has to do with DX11 being the minority, DX11 being around for a little over a year, and the game being set to be released on all three platforms within seven months.

So few people? Last i ve seen PC is at least 50% of the public and counting up as people as saving for PC to be able to use the mods the comunity bring forward.
last i know Console industry is loosing again to PC, because everyone with a sane mind and able to buy a PC know how superior and versatile it is compared to console.
You can bet the console makers especially Sony, with the Japan problems, are pulling some hair off, because if they don t catch up fast they gona get another kick in the groin, since they already got one with the 10 years of the same [censored] having blown worse than Fushukima.
Theyr luck, is the fact they still grab many game maker by the throat.

Also, did I correctly pick up that dragons can also use dragon shouts? Isn't there a dragon ''whisper' allowing the PC, and also presumably a dragon, to silently transport them selves up to a foe. Imagine the trouser soiling moment when you suddenly realize that a dragon has suddenly appeared directly behind you. :ahhh:

especially if they take out battle music.. :unsure2:

There's just one thing I'm hoping for the finishing moves. I know thhey won't be triggered after EVERY fight, but please, do NOT make it like Fable 3 did it (AKA major selling point of the game, yet you do it once every... 5 hours of gameplay?)
I want to see them often. Or at least have some specific way to trigger them

It has to do with critical final blows - if a critical is rolled (with little health left on enemy) then you will receive a finishing move

Seeing what modders have to Morrowind and Oblivion I truly can't imagine what fully modded Skyrim will look like...if modders are able to fully (or nearly) use the DX11 power along with awesome texture packs I swear it will the prettiest game ever :celebration:

Zomg time to read! In the meanwhile, look at the "new" (they were in the GI-magazine, but I haven't seen them legit anywhere on the Internet) hi-res screenshots. They are hyperlinked here:

In light of this news, i thought I would throw together a little chart of anticipated games this year.

(PS. Zoom in a little on the last stage to get a clearer image)

HA! There it is. Not a completely new engine from nothing.

If you have ever been a part of a project where you started with some base code, and then took parts out and recoded them and put them back in it really is something different.

I have been a part of a project that coded an extra 60 thousand lines on top of about 15 thousand already existing, and believe me it's a completely different engine than what you started with.

He certainly makes it sound like attributes are out. Hopefully they'll still exist as hidden values, or at the very least you'll be able to play with them when you first create your character.

Adding DX11 is a superb idea, just so that DX11-specific features can be modded in later, even if they don't get to add them to the vanilla game.

Great interview overall.

Just wanna clarify that it's very hard to mod in a DX feature. Only some very very few modders know how and are able to do it.

Well that's the important thing.

Well, yeah. But things like that takes A LOT of time. And it's very hard to get it perfect. I'm sure there will be talented modders who will try and add DX11 features. But it's probably gonna take a year or two before they start. And probably a a year or two after that before we get to see the features on the Internet.

The mystery for me is why Bethesda want to force all platforms to look equal, when we all know the platforms aren't equal. PC is always superior. If I were Bethesda, I would add more graphics stuff to the PC if I could. Don't really see why not...
Anybody that knows (or can guess) why?

Not intentionally (australian, so my geography is "this part of the world" biased)

Anyone else 50% relieved, 50% disappointed that Howard said dx11 is in, but it's not going to use any substantial features, which means no tessellation.

It's probably going to take a year or longer for capable modders to turn this "equal looking across at platforms" game into something that does technology progress justice since pcs made consoles seem outdated back somewhere around...(2007?)

Name one game that would benefit more than skyrim, and as anyone who has used the uengine benchmark/techdemo can attest, the feature can be scaled off/on like a lightswitch. So people with dx9 hardware would never be forced to use it, and people with weaker dx11 hardware could just scale it up a fraction. However, to me, it seems like the next big progression. And it's sitting right here in front of us.

So us pc users have to wait until console gamers have hardware that is capable. Which i means, I guess, that everyone should get dx11 hardware when the next console generation hits. Since bethesda certainly won't be giving the industry a boost of confidence by being like everyone else. Except, in fact, they are kind of being worse. Even dragon age 2 used tessellation, albiet poorly. And that thing was whipped together in far less than half the time skyrim was.

I don't know, I own a ps3 as well, i just feel bitter about pc users constantly being ignored, and "all platforms must be equal" is pretty much the worst reason I could imagine, even if i sat back and tried to imagine bad reasons a pr/guy/gal could give.

Great interview. IGN asked ALOT of questions that have been driving this forum crazy.

transportation system
DX 11 support (if only to a point)
and answers to stat questions.
all great news

but there is one part in perticular that made me scratch my head and say "Hmmmm"

IGN: Will there still be an opportunity in Skyrim to create custom spells? Can you enchant?

Todd Howard: We do have crafting in each archetype, and the magic one is Enchanting, so you can forge your own magic items and tweak their properties.

so does this mean we can enchant a item and then later alter the enchantment?
